Damien Hirst and Michael Joo at Haunch of Venison Gallery: "Have You Ever Really Looked at the Sun?" - Exhibition Recap

With Gallery Weekend, Berlin is really busy these days. We just gave you an extensive look at the Olafur Eliasson exhibition. The other highlight of the week is the two person exhibition by art superstar Damien Hirst and Michael Joo at Haunch of Venison gallery, entitled “Have You Ever Really Looked at the Sun?”.

The show marks a unique collaboration between the two artists, who have met in Cologne in 1991. The artist worked on joint art works and also present individual art works at the show, including signature pieces of both artists. It is both interesting to see Damien Hirst collaborate with somebody else and in case you have never seen his signature art in person, then you should really not miss out on this extraordinary exhibition.

The official opening of the exhibition takes place tomorrow, May 1st, and the exhibition will run until later this summer.

Damien Hirst Psalm Prints

Damien Hirst’s Psalm prints draw directly from the butterfly collages of his larger gloss paintings and are the most recent of his silkscreen series.

“With the butterfly wings separated and ordered in a mandala-like pattern, their arrangement mimics the precision of a collector’s display. Also calling to mind the exquisite stained glass of Europe’s great cathedrals, the wings of these creatures unite the celestial and the earthly to present us with the possibility of beauty in death.”

The prints come each in two versions, with one being diamond dust coated. The prints are now available from Other Criteria.

Louis Vuitton “Maitres du Savoir Faire” Custom Collection – Damien Hirst

Louis Vuitton "Maitres du Savoir Faire" Custom Collection - Damien Hirst

As part of their Maitres du Savoir Faire custom collection, Louis Vuitton worked with UK artist Damien Hirst on a special trunk.

Damien Hirst was inspired by the movie Dead Ringers by David Cronenburg in which a display of beauti- ful stainless steel surgical instruments caught his imagination. He wanted a piece that was visually stunning in black leather with dark blue velvet interior and toprint his beautiful butterflies on to the outside. Louis Vuitton was inspired by the iconic secre- tary trunk to create two twin trunks with opposite frontal openings and silver hardware finishings.

Each trunk contains 10 different sized drawers with compartments made to accomodate each individual surgical instrument. In line with Damien’s desires the twin trunks have been made in black Nomade leather with a deep blue microfibre lining. The leather has been specially printed with an array of butterflies individually placed by Damien himself. Two silver skulls are incrusted in each of the inside of the lids.”

After the jump you can take another look at the artist working on the trunk and the trunk itself.
