Well, at least they will try. Ever since Jeffrey Deitch was appointed Director of MOCA, the big question was, who was going to continue to represent their impressive line-up of artists. Today the news have come out that the gap will be filled by The Hole Gallery, run by the two former directors of Deitch Projects.

“Today, the answer was announced. According to an article by the Wall Street Journal, that hole is going to be attempted to be filled by – The Hole, a gallery run by former directors at Deitch Projects – Kathy Grayson and Meghan Coleman. It is scheduled to open June 26, with a group show consisting of at least nine artists from the Deitch roster. Future planned projects include a solo show by Mat Brinkman and an installation by Kenny Scharf.” Via AM.

These are good news and The Hole will certainly quickly rise in the New York art machinery. Something to look out for!

In an interesting collaborative project the two artists Roland Berry and Shepard Fairey worked on a series of hand-crafted jackets.

“Two cutting edge American Artists, Rolland Berry and Shepard Fairey have collaborated for the first time to create a collection of “wearable art” – a collection of one-of-a-kind handmade jackets.

The collection consists of three meticulously handcrafted jackets designed by Berry that embody the elements of classic punk rock and undeniably illustrate the mutual respect and understanding the designers have for one another.

Berry approached each of these designs as 3 dimensional painting, giving each piece its own unique pallet, hand studding, hand distressing and hand pulled silk screens. The jackets took about 35 to 40 man-hours each to create, all done buy hand. And it is rumored that one of the jackets has already sold for $10,000!”

These punk rock jackets can currently be seen at Deitch Projects located at 18 Wooster St. in NYC.

Take a more detailed look at the creations of the two artists after the jump.

It looks like a tremendous amount of people came out for the occasion and looked at a great array of new works by the artist. Fairey presented both small and very large scale pieces at the show.

Here below is also a video of the show. Make sure to check it out.

During our Art Basel Miami stay The Wynwood Walls were definitely one of the highlights. Actually the entire Wynwood Art District impressed us and was a great alternative to the otherwise very glamorous art scene and events that were going on throughout the week.

The Wynwood Walls is an outdoor mural project by Deitch Projects and Goldman Properties.

“Fifteen influential artists from Asia, Europe, Latin America (Aiko from Japan, Os Gemeos and Nunca from Brazil, Stelios Faitakis from Greece, and Jim Drain, Shepard Fairey, Futura, Barry McGee, Ara Peterson, Clare Rojas, Kenny Scharf and the team of Swoon, David Ellis and Ben Wolf from the United States.) and the United States have been invited to create outdoor murals on the warehouse walls of Miami’s Wynwood Art District. Tony Goldman of Goldman Properties, one of the major property owners in Wynwood, has made available a group of walls and buildings for artists to work on, concentrated in the area between 2nd and 5th Avenues and NW 22nd and 28th Streets. The project also includes an indoor space at 2550 NW 2nd Avenue where paintings by several of the artists and documentary photographs by Martha Cooper will be exhibited.”

Evan Gruzis is presenting his first New York solo exhibition of ink paintings at Deitch Projects 76 Grand Street gallery this December. Entitled Dark Systems, the exhibition explores the constructedness of the ‘real’ through a dramatic interpretation of actual and represented light.

In his twenty-one new works on paper, Gruzis explores the banal and the theatrical, driven by the dichotomy between the technique of watercolor and ink painting, and his own conceptual impulses. Empty graphic gestures and pop culture objects combine with traditional motifs such as the still life and trompe l’oeil to define a space that is both vapid and seductive. With the sardonic wit of Wayfarer-toting Brett Easton Ellis, and a slick technique of manipulating inks to keep you guessing, Gruzis’ works stick with you like a half-remembered name or intangible word. What you see is often only half there, or mockingly not there at all.

The Keith Haring Foundation, in cooperation with Deitch Projects and Goldman Properties, has recreated the artist’s famed Houston Street and Bowery mural. Painted in the summer of ‘82, Haring’s original graced the city for just a few months before being painted over. Using extensive photographic documentation, Gothic Scenic is reproducing the mural which is sure to invoke memories for those around the downtown art scene of the early ’80s and invigorate the imaginations of those who will see it with fresh eyes. The grand unveiling of the piece is set for May 4 in honor of Keith’s 50th Birthday. It will stand until New Years Eve.

The Keith Haring Foundation was founded to sustain, expand and protect Keith Haring’s legacy, art and ideals. The foundation supports non-profit groups that work with youth, as well as those that research and assist in aids related issues.
