Evan Gruzis “Dark Systems” At Deitch Projects

Open today and on view until December 23, 2008

Evan Gruzis is presenting his first New York solo exhibition of ink paintings at Deitch Projects 76 Grand Street gallery this December. Entitled Dark Systems, the exhibition explores the constructedness of the ‘real’ through a dramatic interpretation of actual and represented light.

In his twenty-one new works on paper, Gruzis explores the banal and the theatrical, driven by the dichotomy between the technique of watercolor and ink painting, and his own conceptual impulses. Empty graphic gestures and pop culture objects combine with traditional motifs such as the still life and trompe l’oeil to define a space that is both vapid and seductive. With the sardonic wit of Wayfarer-toting Brett Easton Ellis, and a slick technique of manipulating inks to keep you guessing, Gruzis’ works stick with you like a half-remembered name or intangible word. What you see is often only half there, or mockingly not there at all.

The latest work from Art Star Kehinde Wiley will be shown at Deitch Projects starting on November 1. Titled “Down” the assortment of four works hinges on classical constructions of fallen soldiers, saints and warriors. Melding these with contemporary figures, Wiley’s hallmark, the paintings are in the astounding scale we’ve come to expect from the artist. “Down” will remain on view until December 20 at 18 Wooster St, New York, NY.

highsnobiety - Keith Haring Houston Street and Bowery
The Keith Haring Foundation, in cooperation with Deitch Projects and Goldman Properties, has recreated the artist’s famed Houston Street and Bowery mural. Painted in the summer of ‘82, Haring’s original graced the city for just a few months before being painted over. Using extensive photographic documentation, Gothic Scenic is reproducing the mural which is sure to invoke memories for those around the downtown art scene of the early ’80s and invigorate the imaginations of those who will see it with fresh eyes. The grand unveiling of the piece is set for May 4 in honor of Keith’s 50th Birthday. It will stand until New Years Eve.

The Keith Haring Foundation was founded to sustain, expand and protect Keith Haring’s legacy, art and ideals. The foundation supports non-profit groups that work with youth, as well as those that research and assist in aids related issues.
