Edwin Japan presents a great new video, giving us a behind the scenes look at their manufacturing, showcasing what makes Edwin denim so unique and how it differs from the mass offering that one is welcomed by in today’s retailers.

“It is impossible to improve what one makes without spending the time everyday to master what one does, turning ones profession into a craft. The denim technicians at Edwin are true craftsmen, as their commitment and attention to the product is unquestionably what makes the Edwin product stand out from the mass of denim available within the market today. Whilst this remains ‘production’, the working philosophy remains closer to a greatly more efficient and productive Artisanal method.

They are ‘engineers’. Each person, over the course of a long period is encouraged to be responsible for maintaining and improving their machines. This means that each machine is self-customised beyond standard industrial purposes, to create unique and specialised ways of making denim. Even within the well-known denim brands factories around the world, you will not see the level of customised machinery and attention to product that one can see at the Edwin factories in Japan. It is for this reason, many ‘core heritage’ Japanese denim brands wish to have their products made within the Edwin Japan factories. This is the unique strength of the Edwin Jeans brand, the product itself.

The majority of the technicians at the Edwin factories and laundry’s have worked within the company since the beginning. This means they have an acute understanding for their machine. Each technician is responsible for three machines on average, all performing different elements of the production process. They remain on these machines for the duration of the careers. There is almost now rotation of staff, offering complete consistency in the making.

Edwin collaborates with traditional Swedish leather manufacturer Jofama on a leather jacket that is a nod to the pilots, the biker and the spirit of rebellion. “Aged buffalo hide sits atop blood red silk lining and vintage rivets and buttons and for those who want to get out of the plane and touch ground there’s a removable fur collar. It’s a romantic piece from a romantic time…”

After having presented to you about a month ago the River Walker II Boots from a collaboration between denim brand Edwin and Danner, we show you today the Mountain Trail, coming from the same get together.

The boots come in two colorways, featuring raw indigo denim and raw black denim uppers. Both feature dark brown linings, black outer soles and contrasting white stitching. Also the boots are each limited to 100 pieces and individually numbered. The boots are now in stock at the official Edwin Japan online store.

Edwin has not only collaborated with Danner on some boots, but also got together with master-piece on a collection of bags. Included in the line-up are a backpack, a tote bag and a messenger bag. All three bags come with Edwin denim uppers, in both raw indigo and raw black. The bags are now available from the Edwin online store.

Denim brand Edwin and Danner have joined forces to collaborate on two colorways of the Denim River Walker II Boots. The high rise boots come in a black and a navy colorway, both featuring uppers made of both suede and denim. Interweaved with Zylon, a synthetic fabric developed TOYOBO, the denim appointments on these boots are resistant to a myriad of extremes and twice as strong as ordinary denim. Each boot is limited to only 100 pairs and they are now available through the official Edwin Japan online store.

It’s hard to tell without seeing these in person (actually, make that touching them), but Edwin’s latest Japanese Denim is actually printed with wear marks rather than washed. Working with Japanese firm Inkmax, the jeans are ran through an inkjet printer to achieve looks based on classic Rebel Vintage patterns. Probably not something for those obsessed with authenticity, but it’s always interesting to see established brands try something new. They’re selvedge for those wondering.
