Young Jeezy x Espo for Complex

In addition to Complex’s Clipse x KAWS collaboration, they did a second cover featuring Young Jeezy, with illustration by Philly graf kingpin ESPO. As Complex puts it, “both artists are known for flipping American capitalism on it’s head, so the partnership was a natural fit.” Again, the issue hits stands on October 6, but you can check out the full interview and a behind the scenes video now. For those of you curious, the third cover is collabo free, but does feature the lovely Eliza Dushku.

Steve Powers "Love Letter" Project | A Detailed Look

Last month, we gave you an early look into artist Steve Powers’ (aka Espo) work with the city of Philadelphia. Now with the project underway, we’re able to offer a closer look at the finished murals. “Love Letter is literally a love letter painted on the walls facing the Market elevated train. 40 local and international artists will paint the walls in august and the letter will be on view for one and all starting as early as Labor Day. The project will encompass 50 painted walls between 63rd and 45th street on Market Street, a documentary film with scripted elements, a sign school and shop that will provide training for area youth and free signage for businesses on the market street corridor, and 2 books documenting the project. One of the books will be a small paperback that will be distributed to area businesses free of charge, for them to sell to visitors. The other book will be a larger hardcover book that will document not only the artwork, but the neighborhood and the inspirations of the Love Letter Project.”

Carrot x Steve Powers "Street Art" Crewneck Sweater

The rainbow colored “Street Art” artwork by Steve Powers aka ESPO has created quite some buzz when it first came out. The message behind the piece is strong, yet not obvious for everybody right away. Carrot Clothing has now worked with the artist and brings the artwork on crewneck sweaters as part of their Fall 2009 collection. In his own words, Steve Powers explains the artwork in the following way: “Street art is gay, and proud of it!”.

More detailed images of the Carrot x Steve Powers sweater follow after the jump.

The ESPO installation at Colette is a two part-er. On site “A True Provider is Good to Find” presents paintings from ESPO’s “Using Other Peoples Electricity to Light Your House” series. These, in essence, are portraits capturing the everyday. No celebrity. No flash in the pants hot art style. ESPO’s intent is simple, to use art to bring attention to things worth knowing.

This idea is central to the second part, L’attraction de la Boue. Here, ESPO and Matt Goias engage in a public art project leading to world aids day, December 1. Following their 2006 project protecting the prostitutes of Canal Street, the duo hit Paris, again using the rain coat as a metaphor for who in society needs the most and should be provided shelter (both physically and emotionally). Goias has created commemorative hotel keys for the project, and the tie in back to the on site, is that these will be sold in limited signed numbers at Colette starting December 1.
