After a first preview the other day, we can give you a full recap of the Mr. Brainwash ‘Artshow 2011′ exhibition, which opened to the public this weekend. Much talked about, much hated, French artist Mr. Brainwash aka Thierry Guetta, certainly managed to attract the masses with this massive event that he put together.

Next to a huge amount of large scale sculptures placed on the ground floor of the 80′000 square feet building, local artists were invited to present their works on the first floor of the building.

Mr. Brainwash’s work will certainly continue to split opinions – he presents pretty much every single cliche that one can think of in the show. The execution is certainly not bad and if it was not him and not all so overwhelming, critics might have turned out differently. He might be the perfect mainstream street artist and is working that to his advantage – we cannot blame him for that. The show must go on!

A full picture recap of the Artshow 2011 follows after the jump.

Officially opening its doors to the public on first Christmas day, December 25th, 2011, we take a first look today at the large scale works by Mr. Brainwash, that will be on display at ‘Art Show 2011′.

The four story warehouse will not only display the latest works of Mr. Brainwash, aka Thierry Guetta, but also the works of other volunteering artists, ranging from The Seventh Letter crew to unknown amateur artists.

In this preview we get a look at massive sculptures, each referencing pop art in one way or another, exactly what one would expect from the artist. We can certainly not wait to read the first critiques of the show.

The Made team continues to make their way through the Art Basel Miami madness and yesterday visited the much anticipated ‘It Ain’t Fair’ group exhibition, hosted every year by the OHWOW crew. This year Materialism is the subject of the exhibition.

“The 2011 installment of this annual group show, now in its fourth year, takes on a thematic focus: materialism. The exhibition features work by over twenty artists, including: Daniel Arsham, Justin Beal, Anna Betbeze, Ashley Bickerton, Scott Campbell, Peter Coffin, Dan Colen, N. Dash, Sam Falls, Michael Genovese, Luis Gispert, Angel Otero, José Parlá, Sara Rahbar, Ryan Reggiani, Bert Rodriguez, Amanda Ross-Ho, Aurel Schmidt, David Benjamin Sherry, Lucien Smith, Agathe Snow, Jessica Stockholder, Nick van Woert, and Aaron Young, including a special, live performance by New York-based artist Michael David Quattlebaum, Jr., during the opening reception.”

“I-20 Gallery is pleased to announce MAKE SKATEBOARDS, a group exhibition and pop-up skate shop conceived as a throwback to the days when art took precedence over branding and a welcoming vibe met you at the door. The show will be a playful take on running a skateboard shop, transforming I-20 into a functional retail space offering a custom line of artist-designed skateboards, skate-related ephemera and accessories, original artwork, vintage objects, custom furniture and clothing by up-and-coming New York designers.

A true working skate shop, MAKE SKATEBOARDS will offer decks that are fully skate-able yet designed to an artistic standard. Two types of boards will be available: affordable, limited-edition silk-screened skateboards; and one-of-a-kind decks altered and embellished by hand, including several conceptual takes on the idea of skateboarding itself.”

Running until September 17th, 2011, the exhibition includes works by Michael Alan, Michael Anderson, Hawkins Bolden, Tony Bones, Slater Bradley, Carlton DeWoody, Chris Dorland, David Ellis, Orly Genger, Debra Hampton, Drew Heitzler, Horse Cycles, Grant Huang, Andrew Huston, Timothy Hutchings, Junk Prints, Jacob Kassay, Marina Kappos, KCDC, Sarah Kurz, Curtis Kulig, Wes Lang, L.A.N.D., Robert Lazzarini, Cameron Martin, Ike Morgan, Moris (Israel Meza Moreno), Scott Ogden, Olek, Erik Parker, Parts + Labor Workshop, Joyce Pensato, Portia & Manny, RePOP, Prophet Royal Robertson, Jenn Ruff, Tom Sanford, Eduardo Sarabia, Peter Saul, Bill Saylor, Kenny Scharf, Ivory Serra, Shelter Serra, MiYoung Sohn, Vincent Szarek, Bruce Lee Webb, WHIT Clothing, Wood & Faulk and Michael Zahn.

Earlier today we attended a preview of the Transmission1 exhibition and event curated by none other than fashion designer Raf Simons. The showcase, which currently takes place at the BCC in Berlin, acts as the launch event for the new digital interview magazine by Mercedes Benz, entitled ‘The Avant/Garde Diaries’. The online magazine, which just launched hours ago, features individuals that think out of the box, as well as innovations and extraordinary ideas. Using the video format, ‘avant-garde’ individuals usually go out and introduce the audience to other creative people that have inspired them on their way.

Tranmission1 is essentially a three day festival, where artists and trendsetters present their take on today’s and tomorrow’s world. All artists were hand picked by Raf Simons. The line-up includes Peter Saville, the British art director best known for designing all Joy Division, OMD and New Order covers. In Berlin he showcases his own Mercedes Benz SL 500, built in 1998, with the car playing Joy Division and New Order music. Konstantin Grcic, the industrial designer, created an installation made of chairs, entitled ‘360′. Choreographer and dancer Michael Clark will be performing tonight to David Bowie music. Furthermore a one hour life set will be played by These New Puritans. Artist Peter de Potter created a large scale photographic installation all around the top floor of the BCC building. Further work will be coming from Germaine Kruip, Goose, Begum Sekendiz Bore and Peter Henderson. A highlight for us today was the showcase of the A-Class Showcar Installation, with the car put into a beautiful foggy scenery.

Last Thursday artist Wes Lang presented an interesting body of work at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles. Produced while being in residence at the hotel for an entire month at the room 34, he provides a visual journal of his stay.

“Inspired by the history, virtue, and ambiance of the Chateau, and as a tribute to Martin Kippenberger’s ‘Hotel Drawings,’ Lang created a suite of over 30 delicately involved works, each with the Chateau Marmont‘s classic logo visible, and some including small printed text, compliments of the Hotel: “In Residence: Mr. Wes Lang.” With imagery ranging from bird illustrations, reminiscent of vintage wildlife plates as in Time Will Tell, 2011, to meticulously rendered nude or partially nude women, to almost exact replications of the Hotel’s logo in pencil and acrylic, to somewhat morbid depictions including skeletons and skulls, these drawings both demonstrate the artist‘s range of visual interests and his technical aptitude.”

In a project that brought together two great artists, Ari Marcopoulus presents the factory of artist Matthew Barney, in his latest photographic project. The project was shot for the second issue of Italian magazine Studio. During Pitti Uomo in Florence, we attended the opening celebration of the outdoor exhibition, which took place in a beautiful Florentine backyard. Large scale versions of the photos were exhibited in the gardens of a villa, setting a beautiful backdrop for photography. The harsh difference between subject matter and scenery of the event, was what really impressed us the most and gave a nice focus.
