Futura “Odyssey Two” Exhibition Berlin

11 September 2009, 17.35 | Posted in Art | No comments »

Futura "Odyssey Two" Exhibition Berlin

Odyssey Two is the upcoming exhibition by Futura and it runs throughout Art Forum Berlin and brings together 20 years of the urban art pioneer’s work. Significant new pieces will be on display, alongside key works such as the original iconic Pointman canvas and a collection of early Pointman sketches.

The show focuses on the dual themes of memory and the past, and the influence these have on an individual’s imagined world. Futura’s obsessions with space and hyperindustrial landscapes grew from his adolescence: a time when man first landed on the moon, and when the New York skyline soared with a mass of fresh skyscrapers. But the world in his pieces is entirely unique – a place that has developed in his mind over time, where remnants of earlier memories co-exist with imagined, abstract landscapes.Futura’s latest pieces show an artist comfortable in the world he has created, making accomplished works that use monochrome and occasional, frenetic bursts of outline to perfectly convey mood, atmosphere and situation, without the need for graphic symbols.

Collector’s will be able to buy an accessible selection of key pieces in the creation of Futura’s world: study pieces provide entry level works; there will be a trademark Pointman series and a limited print run. There will also be a small number of recent abstract canvases presented in the environment of their creation. The exhibition is produced in conjunction with Artorial.

Muenzstr. 19
Berlin

Exhibition opens on September 24th and runs until September 27th.

Mike Shinoda “Glorious Excess (Dies)” Exhibition Recap

Mike Shinoda "Glorious Excess (Dies)" Exhibition Recap

The new Mike Shinoda “Glorious Excess (Dies)” exhibition will be opening soon at the Japanese American National Museum. We get a nice preview of the works on display.

“It’s stunning ~ a definite must see ~ and what’s nice is that besides the fact that the work is technically beautiful and a fun mix of skulls, urban art, “vanitas”, mixed media wallpapering with gossip rags, a casket and silver skeleton, video and more… the way it all comes together as a thought provoking look at the life (and death) of celebrity through paparazzi and the consumption engine behind it all is fascinating ~ especially coming from Shinoda who is most known for Linkin Park and Fort Minor, and he is also an Art Center trained graphic artist and illustrator.”

Take a further look at the works on display by Mike Shinoda after the jump.

Mishka x French T-Shirt And Art Show

After successful collaborations with Arik Roper and Ed Repka, Mishka has decided to continue their legacy of working with the finest artists that encapsulate the twisted and macabre. This summer, Mishka has teamed up with artist Richard “French” Sayer for three new shirts. French’s usage of twisted, ghoulish images, plus an undying love for everything metal, made the partnership an inevitable one for Mishka.

French’s latest shirt design for Mishka drops July 30, 2009 at the Cursed Scrolls art show at Mishka’s flagship store 350. Cursed Scrolls runs for six weeks and will host the opening party on Thursday July 30th at 350 Broadway. All three shirts will be available at Mishka’s online store and at 350.

jose parla hong kong 1 540x404 Jose Parla Reading Through Seeing Exhibition Recap

Today we give you a look at the latest Jose Parla exhibition, “Reading Through Seeing”, which opened its doors at the Ooi Botos Gallery in Hong Kong recently. Once again the artist presents an impressive range of works on several mediums, including canvas, wood, ceramic and paper.

“Parla blurs the line between contemporary and urban art through a hybrid technique derived from his signature calligraphic style and gritty street influence. Many of Parla’s pieces reflect a refined grace and beauty blended onto tangible urban-scapes he creates.”

It certainly seems like its worth passing by. Have a look at more works from the exhibition after the jump.

Ron English Returns To London | Lazarus Rising

ron english elms lesters lazarus rising 1 Ron English Returns To London | Lazarus Rising

Ron English will soon be back in London for the “Lazarus Rising” exhibition at Elms Lesters Painting Rooms.

“The new exhibition “Lazarus Rising” continues this theme, now dwelling on the unprecedented changes in the global economy, using prototypes of iconic cartoon characters and US comic books, so close to American culture and yet suddenly revealing in new ways.

By focusing on the under-the-surface meanings and obscure connotations of American icons, Ron English resurrects their original purpose by revealing the façade. It is by highlighting their inner contradiction that the usually open and recognisable public faces can then be seen for what they really are: tools that serve as corporate shills.

By distorting commonly recognisable characters English is able to change the narrative, and in effect, cancel out the oligarchic cooption. There is a certain illusive nature to American culture that, in the artist’s opinion, could definitely use a counterbalance.”

The exhibition runs from May 8th until June 6th. Some more previews follow after the jump.
