Amazon Kindle Fire Touchscreen Handheld Device

Today Amazon unveiled its latest touchscreen handheld device – the Kindle Fire Tablet. Building on the success of the previous Kindle’s, the new Kindle Fire features an Android operating system and 7″ color multi-touch screen. In terms of size it is 190 mm x 120 mm x 11.4 mm and it weighs just over 400 grams. Next to 8GB internal storage, the new device comes with unlimited cloud storage for all Amazon content and furthermore it supports public and private Wi-Fi networks or hotspots.

Surprisingly the device does not come with a 3G connection or built in cameras, like its competitor, the iPad 2. Amazon stills seems to be concentrating on content rather than too much hardware features. In terms of content, the device of course handles eMail, music, books, magazines, movies and much more, all provided directly by Amazon.

Releasing on November 15th, 2011, the Amazon Kindle Fire is priced at 199 USD.

Sennheiser Ecovinyl Turntables and Headphones by Matthew Lim

Sennheiser Ecovinyl Turntables and Headphones by Matthew Lim

Recent ID graduate Matthew Lim took it up on himself to develop a project for Sennheiser, having in mind a younger consumer. Even though the brand has been around for over 60 years, only a small percentage of 20-35 year olds actually know the brand. As part of his Ecovinyl project he presents a turntable and matching headphones.

Keeping both sustainability and design in mind, the designer produced the two pieces using cork and aluminum.

“Lim developed the concept at the Art Center College of Design. “I took note that Sennheiser has made moves to make their company more sustainable by introducing fully recyclable packaging,” he tells Co.Design. “The next step is to make the product itself more environment-friendly.” He chose high-density fiberboard, which is often used for audio-system closure boxes because of its ability to carry sound reverb; cork for the turntable and earphone headband; and aluminum, which he CNC’d to produce a durable body. Lim capped the target price at $350.

One could certainly buy a used turntable on eBay for less and earn even more green cred, but, as Lim points out, you might still have to purchase extra hardware (an amplifier, EQ adjustment, etc.) to get it up to speed. The Eco-Vinyl, on the other hand, comes in a ready-to-go set. Plus, Lim argues, its carbon footprint is minimal, with 45% fiberboard (which is recyclable and biodegradable) and a metal body that can be easily removed with an Allen wrench and recycled.”

For now, Sennheiser has not reacted to the project or decided to actually produce it. We certainly like the look and principles applied here.

iphone 5 case mate iPhone 5 To Have Radical New Design According to Case Mate

Apple’s iPhone 5 has still yet to be announced and as we’re kept waiting on our toes, accessory makers have been posting upcoming cases for the highly anticipated handset. Case-Mate had published six different case designs for the new iPhone 5 on their website, that showed a radical new body. This image appears to show that the fifth-generation iPhone will have tapered edges and a slim profile, as well as an aluminium back, which jibes with earlier speculation on the handset. As the phone’s expected to be available in America in October, we’re not surprised to see leaks like this start to spill out across the web.
