Asics Gel Lyte Speed Holiday 2009 Surface Pack

Asics Gel Lyte Speed Holiday 2009 Surface Pack

Asics will shortly release two exciting new interpretations of the Gel Lyte Speed, a trainer that was originally developed in 1989 in Japan, and that was launched in the USA and Europe in 1991. The Gel Lyte Speed is a lighter version of the flagship Gel Lyte III, and was designed specifically to meet the needs of experienced runners.

21 years on, Asics is now set to launch two new versions of this successful design called the Surface Pack. Inspired by the outdoors, both shoes feature things a runner is likely to come across when out and about. One of the models is grey to represent the color of the road, and has touches of red and white for a road-sign look and feel, while the other has a more off-the-beaten-track style, with green to represent grass, and a mud-splashed sole and lace design.

These two unique designs from the Japanese running company will be available from 1 December 2009 at selected retailers across Europe!

Detailed images of both colorways of the sneaker follow after the jump.

Asics x Mita Sneakers Gel Lyte Speed

A new collaboration between Asics and Mita Sneakers will hit the market this September. The lightweight running shoe Gel-Lyte Speed is an evolution from the technologically equipped Gel-Light III from 1990. Gel-Lyte Speed, built to meet the demand of increasingly diversifying US runners looking for lightweight shoes, was launched in the US in 1991 and the following year in Japan.

The Gel-Lyte Speed features the split tongue construction; an idea put forward by a shoe developer at the Asics head offices in Kobe in 1988 to prevent the tongue from slipping inside while running. Long-distance runners started taking to this new idea, and the split tongue system was used in the Gel-Lyte III and later in the Gel-Lyte Speed.

The color tone of the 500-pair Gel-Lyte Speed limited edition, a collaboration with Mita Sneakers, was inspired by tropical fruits that bring to mind a comfortable, lightweight and cushioned run along a tropical island beach. The upper uses gradation to further fortify the summer feel. Some of the nylon materials in the upper were inspired by the cotton-woven fabrics often used in Hawaiian summer clothing. Tropical is a key word in this collection.

Asics will soon be releasing a pack of new Gel-Lyte Speeds. The pack consists of three very refreshing colorways of the sneaker, which is after the Gel Lyte III a favorite in their collection.

“The original GEL-LYTE SPEED, the successor of the GEL-LYTE III, was the next chapter in the growing catalogue of GEL success stories. The GEL-LYTE SPEED was developed in 1989, in Japan and was introduced into the US and Europe in 1991. The introduction was in response to the growing need in the US for a new type of running shoe. The running population there was not only becoming larger but also more diverse. It became apparent that more experienced runners required a lighter shoe than the flagship GEL-LYTE III model. To reduce weight, ASICS decided to strip down the GEL –LYTE III, removing certain technologies while other, more crucial features were retained.

Technologies that were kept included the split tongue and of course the unique ASICS cushioning system, GEL. The split-tongue technology was developed in a time when the design trend was all focussed on fitting systems. The split-tongue prevented the tongue from moving too far inside the shoe and offered the runner a better fit, positioning and comfort.” Via Endorsed.

Look out for a release in the coming weeks. Detailed images of all three new Asics Gel Lyte Speeds follow after the jump.
