“MAYDAY” marked the final exhibition of the iconic Deitch Projects space in New York, before its founder moved on to become the current head of MOCA LA. Gingko Press has now released a book by the same name, showcasing the art by Shepard Fairey, that was on display at the show.

The aesthetic of the new breed of poster artist has incorporated hand drawn types and found objects, moving worlds away from the psychedelic ’60s look. In 2004, former Powell-Perralta designer Sean Cliver set out to create the ultimate catalog of skateboard graphic art. Titled Disposable the attempt had a few gaps. In January, Clivers second edition, Disposable II: A Skateboard Collector’s Bible, hits the shelves via Gingko Press. This effort is more comprehensive, and aside from the boards, features stories and interviews from some of the industries best know.

Another new book from Gingko Press is Storefront. The built environment that allows for the formation and development of street culture, from art to skating, is a constantly evolving landscape. While some streets may never change aesthetically, moods do. Tenants change. Shopkeepers move on. Photographers James and Karla Murray have diligently documented the streets of New York for years. They’re interested was sparked by grafitti, leading to two books Broken Windows and Buring New York. Storefronts, moves away from street art, to the look of the streets themselves. Awnings, signage, window display. The changing faces of city blocks. And, also, those that have remained stagnant for generations. Augmenting the photographs are interviews with store owners.

Out this month from Gingko Press, TOYGIANTS Silver Edition showcases the exhaustive collection (over 10,000 pieces!) of Salim Varol. TOYGIANTS is the brainchild of artists Daniel and Geo Fuchs. In this, the second edition, the duo continue their playful exploration of toys and designer-vinyl. Four years in the making, TOYGIANTS presents a vision of Toy Land, replete with villains and heroes, and fictional and real superstars.
To coincide with the release of the book an exhibition of Daniel and Geo Fuchs will appear at Rebel Arts Gallery, Hamburg from April 28 to July 31.
