Recent ID graduate Matthew Lim took it up on himself to develop a project for Sennheiser, having in mind a younger consumer. Even though the brand has been around for over 60 years, only a small percentage of 20-35 year olds actually know the brand. As part of his Ecovinyl project he presents a turntable and matching headphones.

Keeping both sustainability and design in mind, the designer produced the two pieces using cork and aluminum.

“Lim developed the concept at the Art Center College of Design. “I took note that Sennheiser has made moves to make their company more sustainable by introducing fully recyclable packaging,” he tells Co.Design. “The next step is to make the product itself more environment-friendly.” He chose high-density fiberboard, which is often used for audio-system closure boxes because of its ability to carry sound reverb; cork for the turntable and earphone headband; and aluminum, which he CNC’d to produce a durable body. Lim capped the target price at $350.

One could certainly buy a used turntable on eBay for less and earn even more green cred, but, as Lim points out, you might still have to purchase extra hardware (an amplifier, EQ adjustment, etc.) to get it up to speed. The Eco-Vinyl, on the other hand, comes in a ready-to-go set. Plus, Lim argues, its carbon footprint is minimal, with 45% fiberboard (which is recyclable and biodegradable) and a metal body that can be easily removed with an Allen wrench and recycled.”

For now, Sennheiser has not reacted to the project or decided to actually produce it. We certainly like the look and principles applied here.

WeSC have teamed up French visual art duo Kuntzel + Deygas, as music and sound are part of their environment, to create their own headphones. The duo’s marks can be seen along the top of the band, with the phrase “Speak louder please” lazer etched in, and more artwork, including the Caperino & Peperone dogs, featured underneath and on the sides. As part of their Fall 2011 Collection, Swedish brand WeSC gets together with one of their brand ambassadors, Jason Lee, on a limited edition pair of headphones. The Maraca NYC headphones come in both white and black, both featuring the actor/skater’s signature on the inside, as well as gold metal details. Look out for these in stores this season.

Announced earlier this month, we can present you the first product to result from a new collaboration between Swedish brand WeSC and Wu-Tang’s RZA.

Under the ‘Chambers by RZA’ name, the two are releasing a headphone collection, featuring a premium style and a street style. The headphone feature active noise cancellation technology, music sharing, and LED light accents. Both styles will release in a variety of colors in the near future. We will of course keep you posted.

Beats by Dr. Dre from Monster have worked with Lady Gaga on a set of in-ear headphones. The Heartbeats headphones come in black with matching black metal studs and white with gold metal studs. Both the design and the sound on these have been updated. Also they come with a built-in mic, so that you can use them with your phone and computer. They are now available for 149 USD.

Incase today announces the Fall 2011 launch of their new Audio division – a line of headphones. As with all things Incase, the design is of course very much on point and super clean. AERIAL7 has developed an ultra slim superior quality Sound Disk that is inserted into specially constructed Kangol jacquard earlaps. The Sound Disk system incorporates a microphone, which is compatible with mobile devices such as the iPhone and Blackberry.
