Circleculture Gallery in Berlin recently opened their new Self-Portraits by Contemporary Urban Artists exhibition.

The idea of this exhibition is to approach the historical theme of self-portraits and to bring it into a contemporary art context. A self-portrait is a representation of an artist, drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by the artist. Although self-portraits have been made by artists since the earliest times, it is not until the Early Renaissance in the mid 1400s that artists can be frequently identified depicting themselves as either the main subject, or as important characters in their work. With better and cheaper mirrors, and the advent of the panel portrait, many painters, sculptors and printmakers tried some form of self-portraiture… In this respect it is an interesting and new experience to show the vision of the “self-portrait” by contemporary urban artists from all over the world.

Participating artists included JR, Marok, D-Face, Jaybo, Jeff Soto, Aaron Rose and many more. The exhibition runs until July 4th.

A detailed look at all works on display at the gallery follows after the jump.

We have seen this in pretty much every product category and now the phenomenon of artist editions has also come to the otherwise classic field of cufflinks. Hobbs & Kent introduces their “Ex.Arte” cuffling collection, a collaboration with several artists, including Gary Baseman, Jeff Soto and others.

“The result is Hobbs & Kent’s “Ex.Arte” collection. The limited edition cuff links are created for a man that wears Chuck Taylors with a bespoke suit, appreciates the difference between single malt and single cask, keeps his little black book on his iPhone, and understands that Kid Robot is not just a toy store.

Ex.Arte is an innovative collaboration between Hobbs & Kent and featured artists Gary Taxali, Gary Baseman, Ray Caesar, Jeff Soto, and Shaunna Peterson. The artists created their collections based on the theme of “Foursome”—an exploration of things that come in sets of four. A far cry from your grandfather’s cuff links, the exclusive designs–executed in the iconic style of each artist–include depictions of a severed finger, a pirate’s treasure chest, and a Victorian girl smoking a pipe. Using state-of-the-art techniques, the artwork is applied to porcelain and mounted in sterling silver. Each cuff link is hand engraved with the artist’s signature and the edition number. The packaging, specially designed to showcase the cufflinks, features a brushed black wooden box with an artist signed booklet.”

The cufflink collection is now available for pre-order on their website and will also be available at Kidrobot.
