Highsnobiety Feature: World Basketball Festival

Highsnobiety Feature: World Basketball Festival

Tradition. Love. Innovation.

Converse. Jordan Brand. Nike.

Three brands, three themes, colliding in a massive celebration of the game that’s fueled them all – basketball.

Last week in New York, Nike announced the “World Basketball Festival” (“WBF”), a three day blowout set for August 12-15 in New York City. Three pivotal locations are tapped for events – Madison Square Garden, Times Square, and Rucker Park.

Most obvious is Madison Square Garden. “The World’s Most Famous Arena” plays host to two international friendlies ahead of the FIBA 2010 World Championships (taking place in Turkey from late August). The FIBA tournament provides the hook for the festival, as global interest in the game fuels competition and ignites passion. Games between the United States and France, and China and Puerto Rico, cap off the event.

Nike, Inc.’s partnership with USA Basketball comes clear in the games. Jerry Colangelo, director of USA Basketball, recognizes the increased importance of the World Championships, and the necessity of showcasing American attention to the global game.

Air Jordan 1 2K High

After releasing 4 special edition Air Jordan 1’s last year, the Jordan brand decided to mash them all up into one sneaker this season and will be releasing this week the limited edition Air Jordan 1 2K High.

“Last year we released four special colorways of the Air Jordan 1 that paid tribute to the Eastern Conference Foes that MJ had faced time and again throughout his legendary career. The overwhelming demand for those special colors of the Air Jordan 1 inspired the creation of this one-of-a-kind version the AJ1 that brings together the vibrant colors of those four teams into a single bold shoe that is sure to stand out in a crowd.”

The sneaker will be released exclusively online at Nikstore.com and also at Niketown tomorrow.

More images of the sneaker follow after the jump.

Jordan Jeter Throwback

highsnobiety - Jordan Jeter Throwback

Jordan Brand certainly isn’t a stranger to defining moments. We have had packs celebrating key events. We have shoes that combine elements of past Jordan models which cast a wider web over the storied career of the brand’s namesake. And, we have had collectable series drawing together the traditions of both athlete and brand.

The Jordan Jeter Throwback settles into the Jordan Brand tradition nicely. In a single shoe, nine “defining moments” of Derek Jeter’s sterling baseball career are represented.  Most simply, these are represented through a wood grain design on the back of the tongue – which verbally spells out each of the nine moments.

Highsnobiety Q&A | Chris Paul on his Jordan CP3.III

highsnobiety - Highsnobiety Q&A | Chris Paul

On December 26, Jordan Brand is launching the latest version of Chris Paul’s signature CP3. The Jordan CP3.III introduces a new midsole cushioning system, Podulon, designed to complement the New Orleans Hornet’s All-Star guard’s playing style.

Podulon was developed as an evolution to the Independent Podular Suspension system that was a cutting-edge feature of the AIR JORDAN XX. Podulon’s breakthrough lies in the engineered shape of Cushlon foam that, when strategically placed under the forefoot area receiving high impact, provides cushioning exactly where needed without compromising the integrity of the shoe. Cushlon’s lifespan is long, so the Podulon technology is meant to sustain comfort and responsiveness.

Style cues are taken from core elements of Chris’ life, his family and hometown, as well as nods to the Hornets – both in aesthetic and comparison to their agility. Just as the cushion has notes from the AIR JORDAN XX, the use of laser engraved Crests (one for each of Chris’ family members) will remind of that shoes styling. Still, the CP3.III stands on its own merits, as a clean, sleek performance shoe.

A special limited edition of the Jordan CP3.III will go to select retailers on December 26, 2010, with full release coming January 2, 2010.

We took some time to speak with Chris and Jordan Brand Senior Footwear Designer, Jason Mayden, about the shoe.

Jordan Blasé

highsnobiety - Jordan Blasé

On October 1, Jordan Brand (a division of Nike, Inc.) is bringing a brand new look to its trendsetting off-the-court style to stores nationwide.  The Jordan Blasé, pictured above, is a lifestyle shoe catering to those who prefer to make a stylish statement when wearing a dress shoe.

After the Jordan PHLY, this is the next step of Jordan Brand into the lifestyle market. The Jordan Blasé is clearly an off-the-court shoe and come initially in two colorways. The upper (aside from the strap) actually reminds us a little of the Prada America’s Cup shoe.

Have a look at the other colorway of the Jordan Blasé after the jump.
