Today Converse announces the limited-edition José Parlá for Converse (PRODUCT)RED Chuck Taylor All Star shoe launching on World AIDS Day – December 1, 2011. A painter, widely acclaimed in the art world, Parlá’s collaboration with Converse (PRODUCT)RED is designed to help provide awareness for the fight against AIDS in Africa and encourage consumers to become agents of change, turning art into power. A percentage of the net wholesale price of the shoe will go to The Global Fund to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.

Using the Chuck Taylor All Star shoe as a canvas, Parlá chose his painting “Ephemeral Pitches, and Notes, Rhythm and Phonetics” to grace the shoe’s upper. A striking work, the painting explores constant changes to urban lifestyle and was inspired by abstract noises, music, rhythms, languages and sounds of cities. Selected by Parlá in recognition of the change that is part of the mission of (RED), the painting’s themes also represent a nod to Parlá’s days of youth wearing Chuck Taylor All Star shoes to play basketball, dance and have fun.

Only 500 of the José Parlá for Converse (PRODUCT)RED Chuck Taylor All Star shoes will be available, beginning on World AIDS Day – December 1, 2011 at Converse First String retailers globally.

Comprised of paintings, mono-transfers and installations, Character Gestures builds on the artist’s earlier work that dealt with the concept of psychogeography. We get a first look at the upcoming exhibition by Jose Parla at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery. “Walls, Diaries, and Paintings” consists of overall  15 paintings that reflect Parla’s recent travels – through Istanbul, Havana, Tokyo, and more – his mix of abstract expressionism and symbolism capturing the pace of these urban environments.

OHWOW once again managed to bring together a strong line-up of artists for their 2010 It Ain’t Fair Exhibition during Art Basel Miami. Next to Jose Parla, art by Kaws, Barry McGree, Aurel Schmidt and other artists was on display. For the 3rd time OHWOW presents the It Ain’t Fair exhibition during Art Basel Miami. Once again the line-up of participating artists is very strong and certainly something to look forward to.

“t Ain’t Fair is the third edition of OHWOW’s annual group exhibition, presented to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach. Offering an alternative to the overwhelming mazes of art fair booths, It Ain’t Fair will highlight a cogent selection of leading-edge art. Leading up to the “It Ain’t Fair” exhibition by OHWOW, which is taking place this week during Art Basel Miami, we worked with OHWOW on a couple of short interviews with the artists that will be featured in the show. First up is José Parla. We talked his upcoming Art Basel Miami week and also about the work that he contributed to the exhibition.

Highsnobiety: Please introduce yourself to our readers.

José Parla: My name is José Parlá, I am a painter.

HS: What are you most excited about in this year’s Art Basel Miami? Which shows/events/exhibitions do you not want to miss?

JP: There is always so much to see in Miami during this time that is of a high quality but the most interesting for me will be the OHWOW It Ain’t Fair exhibition as I am part of it and I have no idea what any of the other artist in the group show have contributed. The Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz collection, the Rubell Collection’s “Beg Borrow and Steal” exhibition, and the Margulies collection are always on my list and of course the Art Basel Miami Beach fair.

Today we give you a look at the latest Jose Parla exhibition, “Reading Through Seeing”, which opened its doors at the Ooi Botos Gallery in Hong Kong recently. Once again the artist presents an impressive range of works on several mediums, including canvas, wood, ceramic and paper.

“Parla blurs the line between contemporary and urban art through a hybrid technique derived from his signature calligraphic style and gritty street influence. Many of Parla’s pieces reflect a refined grace and beauty blended onto tangible urban-scapes he creates.”

In this week’s edition of Walrus TV, abstract graffiti expressionist José Parlá grants viewers an intimate peek into his Brooklyn studio, streets and neighborhood. Explaining the inspiration behind his pieces, Parlá discusses his replications of surfaces and studies the human mark left upon the deteriorating city. With a recent Sotheby’s auction selling for over fifty thousand dollars (it was estimated with a high of twelve) and an upcoming show at Ooi Botos Gallery in Hong Kong, 2009 is looking like a pretty good year for this prolific New York-based artist. The New Grand Tour is an episodic art project featuring revolving guest artists with hyphenated cultural and geographical backgrounds. The artists and documentary crew travel together to different parts of the globe and express through art exhibitions, the subject matter of towns and cultures they visit.

The goal of The New Grand Tour in the early 21st Century is to bring together the diversified voices of artists and communities from around the world by bridging cultural divides through art and the moving image as the common grounds for communication, education, discovery, exchange, philanthropy and collaboration.

This book chronicles the travels of Suitman (aka Young Kim), Jose Parla, Romon Kimin Yang, Deanne Cheuk and Davi Russo as they embark on a journey through China and engage in a cultural exchange that impacted their life and work forever.
