karl lagerfeld pop up shop KARL Pop Up Shop

The eccentric Karl Lagerfeld has again made news with the opening of a pop up shop called KARL dedicated to, who other than, himself. As you can see from the image, you can pick up a charm featuring a depiction of his face with dark shades and all. Also available is the new line bearing the same name as the store. The shop is located at 375 Bleeker St. in New York. (Source: Refinery29)

Yeezy’s Dw Moves in Reverse – What If Fashion’s Elite Started Rapping

kanye west fashion show paris 0 Yeezy’s Dw Moves in Reverse What If Fashions Elite Started Rapping

I was speaking to a friend the other day, quite a well-known designer, who felt that their latest collection wasn’t as well-received as had been expected. They joked that perhaps, since Kanye West was attempting a sort of couture d’etat on the fashion world, perhaps they should go the other way, and launch a music career.

It’s not uncommon for designers to change disciplines. Hedi Slimane has published fantastic photography books, and Tom Ford managed to shut everyone the hell up when ‘A Single Man’ was released. Still, these shifts don’t seem quite analogous to switching from mic-rocking to the catwalks of Paris.

To be fair, we all know that in the studio Kanye for damn sure doesn’t lack the minerals, vitamins, irons, or the niacins. This month, though, as we all know, Yeezy left the runaways in favour of the runway, with the debut collection of his new label, Dw, at Paris Fashion Week.

Unsurprisingly, reviews were mixed. Cathy Horyn questioned its presque prêt-à-porter tailoring, and Suzy Menkes called it uninspiring; while Tim Blanks threw about backhanded compliments like ‘contextually impeccable’, ‘unprecedented’, and ‘Baby Balmain’ (though B$lmain might be more appropriate).

To me, the collection’s cashmere & cleavage vibe came off largely as a wifey fantasy. Unapologetically luxe, indisputably evocative of a certain lifestyle, the clothes seem to be right in step with the ‘bubbles on the terrace in Southampton’ future that’s surely in store for the lady that out-Roses Amber.

What the Dw collection really got me thinking about, though, was that with Kanye neatly side-stepping from rapper to design wunderkind, what would happen if some of the other fashion designers made the inverse career switch.

A surprising number of designers were on hand to lend their support, from Olivier Theyskens to Azzedine Alaïa, Dean and Dan Caten (D Squared) to Jeremy Scott.

Visionaire 60 “Religion” By Riccardo Tisci

Carine Roitfeld by Karl Lagerfeld for Visionaire Magazine 60 Visionaire 60 Religion By Riccardo Tisci

Riccardo Tisci’s forthcoming issue Visionaire magazine (#60, done in collaboration with Givenchy) explores “religion as liberating force, complete with its share of saints, sinners, and supermodels.”

However vaguely Tisci sees his own faith, his Visionaire is Catholic with a capital C, featuring eye-popping imagery that turns a millennium of European art on its head. Housed in an unfolding wooden case that nods to the great tradition of the altarpiece, the issue doesn’t scrimp on saints, including Carine Roitfeld, appropriately venerated in a series of haunting portraits by Karl Lagerfeld. (“Religion is anything you believe in,” the Chanel designer offers.)

The rest of the issue is an exuberant visual tribute to religious tropes. The Madonna and Child are revisited by Mario Sorrenti, and while she’s not exactly Rubenesque, there’s a certain minimalist serenity about her that beguiles. Paolo Canevari and Francesco Carrozzini canonize Franca Sozzani, complete with a Giotto-like halo, while Tisci’s house model, Lea T, is reimagined by Giovanna Battaglia and Pierpaolo Ferrari as a beautiful veiled martyr in Renaissance-style couture. The Son then comes into his own as Danko and Ana Steiner and Jared Buckheister rework the crucifixion, mounting Jesus on—or is it at—a lectern. Some of the pictures are slightly less tranquil. The shoot by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott of Lara Stone bound in ropes beside a burning cross conjures both Saint Joan and Mississippi Burning. But perhaps the most indelible image is that of Tisci suckling at the breast of Marina Abramovic, a woman who knows a thing or two about suffering for belief.

The above photo sees Carine Roitfeld photographed by Karl Lagerfeld. Visionaire 60 RELIGION is out June 2011. You can pre-order here.
