Artist editions by iconic liquour brands are not exactly new. Many times we see artists and designers work on limited edition bottles. Today we give you a first look at the new Malibu By U bottle, which takes more of a DIY approach.

“This spring, sees the launch of Malibu By U, a special limited edition bottle by the original coconut rum, Malibu. For the first time ever, the iconic white bottle has been turned into a blank canvas so anyone can design their very own Limited Edition label. Malibu’s widely recognised palm tree and sunset logo are muted in a metallic shimmer providing a perfect base for each individual design. This truly one of a kind, collectible will be available in all major supermarkets from 18th May.

The initiative will be supported with a digital gallery – www.malibu-rum.com/byu where fans can either upload a photograph of their creation or create their designs directly onto the white iconic bottle, using a range of fun tools available. So whether your taste is 80’s glamour or contemporary graffiti, consumers will be able to create their own customised designs. Whatever the flair or background, the nation will be encouraged to take part and upload their individual designs, in the ultimate mark of customisation. Remember, the concept is not just for the budding artists out there; it’s for everyone, whatever the ability. The best three entries will then win a trip to some of the world’s most exotic and colourful locations such as Rio, Vegas or Barbados; the home of Malibu rum.

Providing inspiration to the public will be a select number of artists from various design disciplines. One of these is Jimi Crayon, a secret graffiti artist who has customised a Reebok trainer for footballer Thierry Henry, painted live at the Tate Modern and was one of eight artists to ever display work on the notoriously clean walls of M&C SAATCHI’s Soho reception. Jimi will be one of three artists creating his own version of Malibu By U in a key urban hotspot in London. Malibu’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/malibuuk will be providing regular updates on all the artists involved and where their work can be seen.”

The bottles will hit stores tomorrow. You can take a closer look after the jump.

Each publication showcased exceptional creativity, uniqueness and expertise: Vice added a drip effect to the Caribbean color theme; Clark Magazine took a DIY approach, stripping it down to a simple white, and packaging it with stencils and spray paint; while Shoes Up went all out with a shoelace design complete with matching “shoe” box.
