Video: Here Comes The Neighborhood Episode 7 - Martha Cooper

Today we present the 7th episode of the Here Comes The Neighborhood Documentary Series. In this installment, photographer Martha Cooper is being profiled.

“Legendary photographer Martha Cooper has been documenting graffiti and graffiti writers since the late 1970s. Her and Henry Chalfant’s book “Subway Art”, originally published in 1984, was largely responsible for the globalization of graffiti. She has remained a fixture in the community and culture, and has been documenting the Wynwood Walls since the project began in 2009. Her photos tell the story of the Wynwood Walls from its inception to expansion, and all of the artists and their respective works. In graffiti and street art, nothing is permanent, even commissioned walls. Because of the temporary nature of the medium, Martha’s photos outlast almost every piece of graffiti or street art itself.”

Check out the episode here below.

IRAK Bombs Wynwood

IRAK Bombs Wynwood

New York graffiti crew IRAK spent some time in Miami tagging a building in the Wynwood art district. Thankfully Martha Cooper was in place to document the action.

“IRAK spent a few days and nights bombing a Wynwood building located a little off the beaten track. Walk south on 2nd Avenue from NW26th Street and you can’t miss it. Only two sides of the building were finished when I left Miami a couple of weeks ago. One was tagged on black in gradations of white, silver, gray and black and the other on white in silver, gray and a bright orange which nicely coordinated with their T-shirts and shorts.”

Take a further look at the finished work after the jump.
