Archivist, artist, and designer (among many other things) Clayton Patterson has documented life on Manhattan’s Lower East Side since the mid-1980s. The Front Door Book presents images and recollections of the people that have, in Patterson’s words, formed “a summation of everything I have learned.” The photographs in the book were taken outside of 161 Essex Street (Patterson’s home and gallery space), through the years 1985-2002.

highsnobiety - Creative Recreation Fall 2008 Barneys Exclusives
Just like every season, footwear brands Creative Recreation offers next to their regular in-line product a couple of styles, which are exclusive to Barneys New York.
This Fall 2008 season they present two Cesarios, one Cesario Lo and one Dicoco. We have to admit that this seasons Barneys Exclusives are a little less exciting than usual. We do not see any material of design upgrades compared to the in-line product, unlike in previous seasons.
Nevertheless a solid line-up of sneakers. More images after the jump.

“Hip-Hop’s Crown Jewels” | An Auction at Phillips de Pury, New York

25 August 2008, 22.30 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

highsnobiety -
On October, 1, Phillips de Pury & Company is hosting the first auction of hip-hop jewelry. Pieces owned by the likes of Missy Elliot, 50 Cent and Lil’ John are set to hit the block. A major highlight is John’s record breaking "Crunk is Dead" pendent.
Ostentatious jewelry is somewhat of a hallmark of mainstream hip-hop culture. The one up-manship, and ultimately craftsmanship that goes into many of the pieces is rather incredible. A question the auction may answer is – Could this become a major collecting category?
The elements are there. Strong provenance and back story. Artistic (if not tasteful) productions. Connection to historic events… there’s even some pieces from Pac and Biggie’s adversarial years in there.
Part of the proceeds will benefit Rush Community Affairs.

highsnobiety - colette pop-up store nyc
We already reported earlier that Colette is closing on July 7th until August 25th for renovations. The new interior of the store is created by Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall, whom you should know well by now for creating all Bape stores as well as the Original Fake and many recent Uniqlo stores.
There will also be a mini Colette opening in New York on September 6th until October 5th. The pop-up shop will be located next to the Gap flagship store on 54th Street near 5th Avenue. Of course they will have a ton of collaborative product available just for the new location.
Last but not least they are promising a revamp of their website, which will mainly change the experience of online shopping and make it closer to their in-store experience.
Lots of good news!

Does this mean that Bape NYC is not selling out of their stock anymore as quickly as it used to be? Who knows, but this is good news for people that do not live anywhere close to New York or Los Angeles.
Policy is pretty much the same as in-store, meaning no returns, no exchange and no refund.

“Deathbowl To Downtown” – The Evolution Of Skateboarding In New York

05 May 2008, 20.10 | Posted in Other | No comments »

deathbowl to downtown nyc skate movie - highsnobiety
“Deathbowl To Downtown” is a new movie presenting the evolution of skateboarding in New York City.
“Along with San Francisco and Barcelona, New York is arguably the modern street skating city, both in reality and image. Because of the unique background, experience and perspective of the film’s creators and the decision to “cast” the city of New York as one of the main characters, Deathbowl to Downtown promises to be an unprecedented, seminal film.
Like Rick and Buddy’s other work, Deathbowl to Downtown goes deeper than ‘just’ skating to combine documentary with an incisive and artful exploration of skateboarding and its culture. On one level it’s about street skating, but also an anthropological overview of skating’s epochal shift from the parks and pools of the 70’s, to ramp skating in the 80’s, to the street ascendancy of the 1990’s as seen from a New York-centric perspective.
With interviews covering the oldest school originators to the newest school up steppers, comprehensive and much of it never-before-seen video footage, and present-day film shot by Nichols and Charnoski, ‘Deathbowl to Downtown’ addresses broader issues: How changes in urban planning and design affected skating (and vice versa), the unexpected late 20th century shift of cities from places normal citizens feared to tread, to tourist destinations, and the parallels between the modern history of American cities and skateboarding. That is, the way New York, and skateboarders, went from being ignored and reviled through 70’s and 80’s to being accepted and celebrated. An entertaining, eye opening, thought provoking take on why the action on New York’s dirty, grimy, and hectic streets represents skateboarding to millions of skaters and non-skaters worldwide.”
Definitely a very interesting movie to be looking out for. On their website there are nice photos and clips to check out. Via Keith Hufnagel.
