The FADER Issue #73: Notorious BIG

The FADER Issue #73: Notorious BIG

The FADER once again presents their Icon issue. For 2011 they chose to commemorate the late Notorious BIG with the issue.

“We’ve always tried to parse their influence by speaking with friends, family and fans to create a portrait of their lives both in and outside of music. However, with an artist like Notorious BIG, the subject of this year’s issue, much of that work has already been done because Big was so beloved. We’re not trying to compete with Notorious, but we set about painting a portrait of Big both as a rapper and as a regular dude. In our issue you’ll read accounts from the intern who witnessed Big and Tupac’s first encounter, you’ll hear what Puff thinks about when he listens to Biggie’s music today. You’ll see new photos of prominent places in Big’s life, from the tunnel he drives through backwards in the “Hypnotize” video, to the block where he performed his infamous teenage freestyle.”

The FADER Icon Issue 2011 will release on newsstands on May 3rd. Make sure to pick one up.

A video announcing the issue follows after the jump.

Video: Clark Kent Recalls His Favorite B.I.G. Memories

11 March 2011, 19.10 | Posted in Music | 1 comment »

“On the 14th anniversary of the death of the person some recall as the “greatest rapper of all time” we wanted to do something really special, so we met up with DJ Clark Kent who was The Notorious B.I.G’s DJ and longtime friend from Brooklyn. In this clip Clark talks about what it was like working with Biggie to put together the Junior M.A.F.I.A. album, going with him on his first shows and trying to convince him that an up and coming rapper named Jay-Z was worth a listen.”

No Homer – Hip Hop Icons Simpsonized

Format has come out once again with a fun series of characters. Last time around we saw them turn Hip Hop albums into Lego figures, this time the Hip Hop icons were Simpsonized. The set features Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Flava Flav, Eazy E, Andre 3000, Eminem, and Fat Joe alongside iconic O representations for each artist.

Designed by Moxy Creative the posse shot is available as a 11.75 x 15.75 limited edition (100) print for $45 USD including tax and shipping. Special orders for individual artist shots are available at $55 USD by e-mail (editors@formatmag.com).

After the jump you can check out the individual Simpsonized versions of each artist.

Biggie x Barron x SSUR | T-Shirt Collaboration

biggie barron ssur 1 Biggie x Barron x SSUR | T Shirt Collaboration

SSUR is proud to announce the release of the Notorious BIG collaboration tee. The King of Brooklyn 3 style tee release, which is scheduled to drop early January of 2009, will be sold exclusively at SSURPLUS in NYC, online at www.ssurempirestate.com and selected boutiques around the world.

Widely acclaimed photographer Barron Claiborne’s portrait of B.I.G. (taken a couple of days prior to the tragic death) would become the last and most notorious image of the legendary rapper (as well as the most bootlegged hip hop photograph ever taken). Barron, a long time friend and patron of SSUR, collaborated on a triptych of tees celebrating the famed image, presenting a true depiction of this widely misused portrait in all media (and formats).

SSUR, also hailing from Brooklyn, NY, added his artistic take on the Claiborne reproduction by creating a morphing effect of guns. Depicting an image which ultimately caused the death and silencing of the lyrical genius.

Have a more detailed look at the artwork after the jump.
