“After being appointed the new director of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) this January, former New York dealer and downtown impresario Jeffrey Deitch needed some digs on the West Coast. Seasoned aesthete that he is, to truly feel at home he needed to surround himself with the art he loves (click play above for a sneak peek of the pieces by Tim Noble and Sue Webster, Aaron Young and Andy Warhol, among many others). Deitch’s new “movie star” home, in LA’s Los Feliz neighborhood, isn’t just any old Spanish revival house—it’s the former residence of Cary Grant. (Meanwhile, another prominent figure in the art world is buying into Hollywood history: Larry Gagosian recently purchased Gary Cooper’s old abode, in Holmby Hills.) Deitch is particularly interested in where art and entertainment merge. As part of his early activities at MOCA, he allowed his friend James Franco to film an episode of General Hospital within the museum; and the first show under his leadership was a major Dennis Hopper retrospective. For today’s short, filmmaker Alison Chernick and food artist Jennifer Rubell toured Deitch’s house—including his “super Tudor-pop” party room, as he calls it—and sounded out his theories on celebrity, his new vision for MOCA, and his belief that you need a painting of Jesus over your bed.” (nowness).

“Yes, Darcel sets off today on an intercontinental trip to cover the spring 2011 catwalks exclusively for NOWNESS. First stop is New York Fashion Week, whose preeminent trendsetters—Ralph Lauren, Tavi, Alexander Wang, André Leon Talley, Freja Erichsen, Marc Jacobs, Kim Hastreiter, Alexander Wang and, of course, Anna Wintour—star in today’s Brady Bunch-style introductory film. From tomorrow, as the shows begin to kick off, our ovoid friend will be reporting from the fashionable front line, delivering a daily Darcelism on his trials, which will available exclusively on NOWNESS and can be reached by clicking on the appropriate link in the “Today’s Stories” panel, or the the banner at the top of this page. Darcel’s travels will continue through October, where he will end up in Paris, via London and Milan, and on the first day of each fashion week he will debut a new animated film.”

Nowness presents the new 2010: A Space Odyssey by designer sisters Rodarte. The short movie was filmed at Elon Musk’s Space X compound by Todd Cole.
“Guinevere van Seenus stars in Aanteni, a high-fashion techno-thriller from CFDA award-winning design sisters Rodarte, shot by their friend and frequent collaborator, the photographer and video artist Todd Cole. Set in the deserted grounds of Paypal founder Elon Musk’s Space X jet lab in Hawthorne, California, the film was inspired by the pioneering spirit of the space race, which, according to Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy, “has defined generations of artists in their desire to use new mediums and question the established rules they were taught to follow.” This cinematic collision between rocket science and visual daring is an apt match for Rodarte’s spring 2010 collection—a symphony of flesh-colored crochet knits, fluorescent fibres, leather bandages and distressed plaid. Costumed in a series of these exquisite creations, Van Seenus blurrily emerges from a shimmering seascape before running through the starkly alluring spaces of the Space X facility—a former Boeing airline hanger that has been transformed into what the Mulleavys call “a world defined by color, texture and material.” Van Seenus’ hallucinatory journey, punctuated by glimpses of mysterious experiments and sudden rocket blasts, is chillingly soundtracked by LA noise-merchants No Age. We advise you to strap in and don a helmet for the spectacular finale—a truly stratospheric experience that takes Rodarte’s unique vision beyond the final frontier. “
