Olafur Eliasson “Innen Stadt Aussen” – Exhibition Recap

Olafur Eliasson "Innen Stadt Aussen" - Exhibition Recap

This week we had the chance to have a detailed look a the large scale solo exhibition of famed artist Olafur Eliasson. The exhibition takes place at the Martin-Gropius Bau in Berlin and marks the first solo exhibition of the artist in Germany, even though he has been living and working in the city for many years.

Just like we are used to see from Eliasson, the artist explores light and uses it along with mirrors and the reflection effect to create fascinating art pieces. The exhibition is split into several different parts, each interesting on its own. You can wander from an entirely mirrored room, to a sequence of rooms that are filled with fog (The Blind Room). The fog, together with different light effects results in an interesting aging effect on your skin. It is exactly this kind of interaction with the viewer that keeps us drawn into the exhibition. Another favorite for us was a room, in which the artist used water and flash lights, resulting in an incredible play. We tried to capture everything on both picture and video to best portray the exhibition.

Another highlight of the exhibition is a movie that Eliasson produced, entitled the same as the exhibition – Innen Stadt Aussen. With interesting mirror effects he created scenes all around Berlin. The result is very interesting. Last but not least, little details, such as real Berlin pavement on the floor, make this an event not to miss.

Mekanism Skateboards x Olafur Eliasson

Mekanism Skateboards once again impresses, having worked for their second 2009 project with Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. The artist is well known for his large exhibition structures and most recently for the impressive sun artwork. With Mekanism the artist of course worked on skateboard decks. The “Your Mercury Ocean” decks have a silver reflective upper and for the first time the artist also reworked the upper structure of the board into a 3D structure. The various levels on the board, give the impression of a wave pattern. The artist worked on overall 90 skatedecks, as well as 10 artist proofs and 10 exhibition pieces. Without a doubt this has to be the most impressive project by Mekanism to date.

Take a further look at the Mekanism Skateboards x Olafur Eliasson “Your Mercury Ocean” Skateboard Series after the jump.
