Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 “Island Sneaker”

Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 "Island Sneaker"

To truly respect the brand’s heritage and authenticity, Onitsuka Tiger submerged in the Japanese symbolism of the 60 year cycle and discovered the ancient Japanese legend of the Zodiac Race. For their 60th anniversary Onitsuka Tiger created a huge ‘Zodiac Race’ sneaker island.

This fall 2009 Onitsuka Tiger will unveil its Cycle of life Zodiac product package to the public. It features a special T-shirt and a direct translation of the ‘Zodiac Race’ sneaker island into a Mexico 66 shoe. This version of the Mexico 66 is executed in an all over photo print with a very unique finish, giving the shoe an extra 3D effect and nice suede detailing.

The special celebration box (for the shoes) and the hang tag (for the T-shirt) both feature a design of the white paper and red and white ribbon traditionally used to wrap a 60th birthday present in Japan. The pack will be launched in October 2009.

More images of the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 Island Sneaker and T-Shirt follow after the jump.

Once again Wood Wood shows us a new footwear collaboration. After recently working with adidas, Converse and others, they now worked with Onitsuka Tiger on the classic X-Caliber GT. Once again the Copenhagen label impresses by creating a shoe that it both classic and wearable, yet different from the masses. Too many collaborations out there go too crazy and turn out to be un-wearable, and it is never the case with Wood Wood’s work.

onitsuka tiger caliber x 1 540x381 Onitsuka Tigers X Caliber Returns

Developed in 1982, the Onitsuka Tiger X-CALIBER was the first of its kind to feature a unique mid-sole design, incorporating air flex canals to give increased movement and superior cushioning.

It featured a reinforced toe design to help prevent injury to toes through slipping forward in motion, a unique zigzagged ‘quadra lacing’ system to ensure superior fit, mesh and nylon uppers to ensure better air ventilation and support, and most importantly – it looked great.

The X-CALIBER used the highest technology and most sophisticated designs available. The first shoes came out in a great range of early eighties colour ways. For the re-introduction the original colors are being reissued in true retro style: Red Clay/White and Blue/Silver. They will be launched at selected retailers across Europe on 1st of July.

Detailed images of both colorways of the Onitsuka Tiger X-Caliber follow after the jump.

Onitsuka Tiger 60th Anniversary: The Zodiac Race

05 February 2009, 14.10 | Posted in Sneakers | 3 comments »

onitsuka tiger 60th anniversary 1 Onitsuka Tiger 60th Anniversary: The Zodiac Race

Once again Onitsuka Tiger has come up with a special theme and campaign and will be celebrating their 60th anniversary this year with the symbols of the Zodiac Race.

“in japanese culture a 60th birthday is a milestone of major significance laden with symbolism around the ‘cycle of life’, which is itself based on the japanese zodiac calendar.

amsterdam worldwide has reworked the ancient zodiac legend, which tells how 13 animals raced against each other to secure a spot in the zodiac calendar, to create a campaign that works across multiple communications channels. these include: a one metre-long sneaker diorama; an animation; print ads; online and in-store executions.

at the heart of the campaign is the breathtaking one metre-long zodiac race diorama shaped like a sneaker, which recreates a mythical japanese landscape in miniature.

the diorama is hand-built using the five ruling elements – wood, fire, earth, metal and water. the design features several japanese landmarks including mount fuji, the tottori sand dunes, ice sculptures from the hokkaido region, the dry volcanic area of kyushu and the pylons powering the bright lights of tokyo.” Via Designboom.

They also made a three minute animated film for the occasion and of course sneakers with the animal themes will be releasing all year long, more on that soon.

More images of the Onitsuka Tiger 60th Anniversary Zodiac Race Diorama follow after the jump.
