Peter Saville, the London-based graphic design legend and meanwhile art director, who gained notoriety through his artwork for bands like New Order and Joy Division, is a keen observer of society and not shy to disclose his opinion. For The Avant/Garde Diaries he explains his view on the status quo.

Earlier today we attended a preview of the Transmission1 exhibition and event curated by none other than fashion designer Raf Simons. The showcase, which currently takes place at the BCC in Berlin, acts as the launch event for the new digital interview magazine by Mercedes Benz, entitled ‘The Avant/Garde Diaries’. The online magazine, which just launched hours ago, features individuals that think out of the box, as well as innovations and extraordinary ideas. Using the video format, ‘avant-garde’ individuals usually go out and introduce the audience to other creative people that have inspired them on their way.

Tranmission1 is essentially a three day festival, where artists and trendsetters present their take on today’s and tomorrow’s world. All artists were hand picked by Raf Simons. The line-up includes Peter Saville, the British art director best known for designing all Joy Division, OMD and New Order covers. In Berlin he showcases his own Mercedes Benz SL 500, built in 1998, with the car playing Joy Division and New Order music. Konstantin Grcic, the industrial designer, created an installation made of chairs, entitled ‘360′. Choreographer and dancer Michael Clark will be performing tonight to David Bowie music. Furthermore a one hour life set will be played by These New Puritans. Artist Peter de Potter created a large scale photographic installation all around the top floor of the BCC building. Further work will be coming from Germaine Kruip, Goose, Begum Sekendiz Bore and Peter Henderson. A highlight for us today was the showcase of the A-Class Showcar Installation, with the car put into a beautiful foggy scenery.

Arkitip has released their latest issue, No. 49, on which they worked with Peter Saville.

Arkitip No. 0049 will be a virtual catalog of Peter’s work including essays from Saville’s colleagues throughout his career. It will also include two original prints from the designer in an edition of 1500. The prints will be 12 x 12 inches on 100 lb. archival stock and will sit on top of the magazine inside a custom designed box carefully encasing the magazine and prints.

There are two sets, individually going for 50 USD and together you can have them for 75 USD. Take a look at the packaging after the jump.

In 2005, Peter Saville began to play with the notion that in the current climate of mass culture, display meant as much to the idea of art as the object of art. His response to this has been to create a series of card board plinths, available to the public, so the everyday punter can choose what they believe is art. “Accessories to An Artwork,” Saville’s newest exhibition at Paul Stolper Gallery in London takes this premise. Saville picks the objects to sit on his plinths, including work by Hans Ulrich and Jarvis Cocker. Not necessarily the most inspired activity of Saville’s career.

Known for his record cover work for Factory Records and others, Peter Saville has now gotten together with DC Shoes to collaborate on a series if t-shirts, featuring one of his more famous designs. The t-shirts come in black and white with all-over graphic prints.

The DC Shoes x Peter Saville t-shirts are now available in the Black Rainbow Shop.
