5,247 photographers from 124 countries submitted 101,254 pictures for the 2012 World Press Photo contest. In the end 350 images by 57 photographers were awarded prizes in nine categories.

We won’t front, we thoroughly enjoy Tumblr. Last week, we did a top 10 of original photo Tumblrs that really went over well. We have decided to follow it up with another Tumblr-centric post featuring some random ones that we follow and enjoy. San Diego-based photographer Tim Mantoani undertook a fascinating project in which he photographed photographers holding some iconic imagery that they were responsible for. It’s always a great thing putting a face to something, as is the case here. There’s no doubt that you have seen some, if not all of these images at some point.

What’s also astonishing is that these were all shot with a large format 20×24inch Polaroid camera, which cost Mantoani $200 per photo. Over 150 portraits were created during a 5-year period, and with the camera company going under, it made it that much more of a mission to complete.

The book is now available in 2 versions at Behind Photographs. Check out the video below to get some insight into the project from Mantoani.

Vans presented Heel Bruise & Stussy’s “Under the Radar” exhibition this past week in Long Beach, CA and here is a full look at the works on display. Photos from Kenny Anderson, Keith Hufnagel, Nic Fensom, Natalia Mantini, Robbie Jeffers, Ray Barbee, Curtis Buchanan, Jeff Potocar, Jon Warren, and Devin Briggs were all exhibited in this second UTR event. Every photographer put forth some amazing photos ranging from portraiture, still life photography, as well as some breathtaking landscape shots by Jon Warren.

Chinese contemporary artist Li Wei is definitely a master at his unique craft. His unique photos would make great stills for an Ang Lee movie, that’s for sure. Wei uses wires and platforms to create these distinct pieces of art in a fusion of performance artistry and photography. However you view it, it’s some very cool stuff.

London’s Foto 8 Gallery is currently hosting a photo exhibit by UK photographer Jocelyn Bain Hogg. The series, titled The Firm, offers an intimate look at UK organized crime members through the lens of Hogg. The photographer was granted some really extensive access to mob personnel and what she captured was a really gritty look into daily life including attending public functions, funerals, private parties, all the way down to debt collecting. This is a truly high impact body of work. We envy those with the opportunity to see this first hand.

National Geographic’s 2011 photo contest concluded recently, and so here is a look at the winners, as well as some honorable mentions. The publication received over 20,000 photo submissions, so we imagine that going through such a vast amount of images and whittling them down to select these must have been quite the process. It was all worth it as some of these are truly amazing captures.

Photographer Tyler Shields has always been the provocative type with his shoots. In his new ‘Riot’ series, he answers to the Occupy movements around the globe and has his girlfriend, Francesca Eastwood, and long time collaborator Alessandra Torressani “shoot pepper spray right back at the cops and wrestle them to the ground, all for the benefit of a group of male photojournalists. In one shot, our female protester throws a policeman against the hood of a car, but he’s still smiling — enjoying the occupation?.”

As much as Shields might want to make a statement supporting the Occupy movements, having well paid models handcuff police officers might not send the right message out there. What do you think?

Today we come across the photo series ‘Dark Lens’ by photographer Cédric Delsaux. The artist recreates hyper real cityscapes and includes Star Wars vehicles and characters into his photos. The Millenium Falcon sits in between construction in Dubai and Jabba The Hutt is found in a ruin in Paris. While the photographer first ventured out to capture modern landscapes, the idea of adding sci-fi characters only came after and he ended up getting a photography prize for the series.

The book “Cédric Delsaux: Dark Lens” has just been published by Éditions Xavier Barral of Paris and is being distributed in the United States by D.A.P.

In the end of the day, Terry Richardson gets them all in front of the lense. After shooting ASAP Rocky already a while ago for the Happy Socks Campaign, the two got together once again before the holidays. From the usual portrait shots to the ‘ASAP Rocky As Me’ version, the New York photographer did a full shoot, also featuring ASAP Yams.

At a special event today, the much anticipated Pirelli Calendar 2012 will be released. Limited to only 20′000 copies worldwide, the calendar is actually not easy to get a hold of, as it does not go on sale anywhere, but is send out by Pirelli.

After Karl Lagerfeld last year, the 2012 calendar was shot by Mario Sorrenti and includes the usual high profile model faces (and bodies) that one would expect. The star of the new calendar is without a doubt Kate Moss once again. Other models featured, include Lara Stone, Kate Moss, Mila Jovovich, Rinko Kikuchi, Saskia de Brauw and Isabeli Fontana.

The MADE team also stopped by the Jonathan Mannion exhibition in Miami last week.

Jonathan Mannion, NYC based photographer, director, designer and artist, who has photographed some of the biggest names in the hip hop world such as The Notorious B.I.G., Outkast and Jay-Z, came down to Miami during Art Basel and exhibited a selection of some of his classic photographs from through out his career. During the opening night of the three day exhibition at AE District in Miami, which also featured a live performance by up and coming rapper ASAP Rocky and a DJ set by Clark Kent, Jonathan showed them around his exhibition and talked to them about his craft.

As we get close to the end of the year, one comes across lots of recaps. As usual images say more than a 1000 words and in the last 12 months a lot has happened. One tends to forget really quickly, but as you go through the following images, you only realize how much has actually happened. The passing of Steve Jobs and Amy Winehouse, the earthquake in Japan, Occupy Wallstreet and the wave of demonstrations around the globe against banking and capitalism, the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the killing of Osama Bin Laden,  the London riots, terror attacked in Oslo, the continued uprisings through out the Middle East and a lot more. These happenings stay in the news for a couple of weeks and the minute the next big thing happens, one forgets about all the previous ones.

National Geographic is currently holding its annual photo contest. The Atlantic published a selection of 45 images from the contest, in the categories People, Places and Nature. As you can imagine there is some very impressive material among the submissions. Last year they received 16′000, meaning that the winning photos of each category have defeated quite some competition on the way to the throne.

Photographer/director and Vice Magazine contributor Patrick O’Dell put together this nice little photo series entitled ‘Babes on Wheels’ featuring some rather lovely ladies riding around on some wheeled apparatuses. The ladies were styled in pieces by Stussy, Volcom, Emerica, Von Zipper and DC and they are shown cruising on some Baker Skateboards, Harleys, roller skates and bicycles. Oh, and it is NSFW, so be careful while perusing.

German artist Andreas Gursky once again set the auction record for a photograph. After he previously set a record with his “99 Cent II Diptychon” photo at 3.3 Million USD, his ‘Rhine II’ work now sold at Christie’s for 4.3 Million USD. Gursky is known to only produce 6 copies of each of his photos, of which usually 5 end up in museum collections. In the case of the ‘Rhine II’ piece, the other copies are owned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, Munich’s Pinakothek der Modern, and the Glenstone Collection in Potomac, Maryland. His works are all massive in size, in this case 143 inches by 73 inches. It took a long time for photographs to be appreciated as real art and for auction prices to reflect that, one can safely say at this point, that this discussion is off the table. (Via Telegraph)
