In contrast to the usual minimalism that we see from Japanese designers and artists, Satoshi Minakawa presents photos of excentric customizations of Japanese vehicles.
“In shot after shot, Minakawa presents vehicles that look as if they came straight off some deranged kabuki set. Nothing looks as if it was ever meant for anything so mundane as road transportation. Gaudy gold fins are welded to the boot of two-wheeler carts. Trucks are festooned with blinding neon signs, their every surface plastered with kanji script and strobe lights. Meanwhile, the fleet of motorbikes and scooters are painted in a resplendent rainbow of glossy blues, reds and blacks; some are even adorned with stylized eyes on the fender.
The overall effect is one of manga Transformers, a split second before they unfold, unclip and spring into life.” Via Wallpaper.
The photographers work is on show at The Printspace in London, until January 14th.

German photographer Andreas Gursky has impressed us for the longest time with his large scale photographs, that usually capture a scene with repeating patterns. The size by itself is impressive, but also the way his images come out set him apart.
If you are in New York, you can now go and check out his latest exhibition at the Matthew Marks Gallery. It is well worth it.

Ithoughtiwasalone ( http://www.ithoughtiwasalone.com ) is a space dedicated to a new generation of photographers, led by Lele Saveri and Serena Pezzato. Its intent is not only to supply a curated window for up and coming photographers, but also for photographers who are already professionally involved in the business and who need an outlet for “personal projects”. In ITIWA, there are no guidelines for technique, aesthetic, nor content. The aim is solely to show beautiful things. As an old milanese poem states, “Curiosity put eyes in the body of human beings” and not the institution of art, thank god.
For the show during Milan’s Fashion Week, ITIWA set up at VNGRD, their good friends’ showroom. For this show they presented two limited edition t-shirts (15 pieces each, all numbered, available online from VNGRD). One with Carlotta Manaigo’s photograph and the other with Stefan Simikich’s. This concludes the final phase of “This is all I came to do,” the first ITIWA project. The show itself will run till the 4th of October.

20 years before there was YouTube, and Macaca, Critical Mass arrest videos, and the RNC, Clayton Patterson was capturing video that exposed the struggle between community activists and the often abusive NYPD. He dedicated his life to documenting the final era of raw creativity and lawlessness in New York City’s Lower East Side, a neighborhood famed for art, music and revolutionary minds. Traversing the outside edge, he’s recorded this dark and colorful society–from drag and hardcore, heroin, homelessness, to political chaos and, ultimately, gentrification. In the LES of the late 70’s and early 80’s, it seemed that it was impossible to take a boring photograph.
Realizing this, Patterson vowed to himself not to miss a moment, and he was a ubiquitous presence on the streets, in bars, and at parties, shooting literally hundreds of thousands of photographs and countless videos that captured the essence of the era in what might have been the most thrilling neighborhood on earth. For native New Yorkers, looking at his documents is like staring through a window to our own past, and the drugs, piercings, mohawks, kangols and graffiti on display are, in this context, not kitschy and nostalgic. Rather, they express the rich diversity of many little communities living together in a troubled little niche of the city, long ago changed beyond recognition.
Captured will be shown this Friday, August 22 at the New Museum, Bowery, New York. Following the film, Clayton Patterson will be available for a Q&A. Event begins at 7:30.
