National Geographic Photo Contest 2011 Winners

National Geographic’s 2011 photo contest concluded recently, and so here is a look at the winners, as well as some honorable mentions. The publication received over 20,000 photo submissions, so we imagine that going through such a vast amount of images and whittling them down to select these must have been quite the process. It was all worth it as some of these are truly amazing captures.

Check out the photos after the jump.

Nike “Being True – 22 Years Of American Youth” Exhibition

02 April 2008, 13.52 | Posted in Art | 1 comment »

nike being true 22 years of american youth exhibition - highsnobiety
The camera never lies and that is why photography is the best way to capture raw, unfiltered authenticity.  “Being True” is an exhibition presented by Nike which plays off this notion, bringing together 22 photographers who’ve used their cameras to capture a moment in time when a subject, completely devoid of pretense, expressed him or herself honestly and truly. Whether it’s a stylistic statement; a look of joy, thoughtfulness or anguish; or a physical movement, these young faces represent American youth culture in its purest form.

In the spirit of the shoe that inspires those who dare to be different, curators Emma Reeves and Aaron Rose sorted through entries from 100 lens men and lens women and settled on a diverse go-to group. The exhibit reaches back 22 years and includes established, as well as up-and-coming photographers (and anything in between), What they have in common, and what makes their images so impactful, is that they’ve managed to capture, in the blink of an eye, a visual manifestation of “Being True.”

“Being True – 22 years of American Youth” features photography from:
Tim Barber, Angela Boatwright, Kenneth Cappello, Poppy De Villeneuve, Cheryl Dunn, Naomi Harris, Alex Hoerner, Drew Jarrett, Alain Levitt, Jeaneen Lund, Ari Marcopoulos, Dan Murphy, Jason Nocito, Patrick O’Dell, Mike Piscitelli, David Ransone, Terry Richardson, Jamel Shabazz, David Perez (Shadi), Brent Stewart, Ray Potes, Tobin Yelland.
The exhibition took place in New York and will come this week to Los Angeles.

Feature: The Afflicted Yard

RTEmagicC afflictedyard header.jpg Feature: The Afflicted Yard
Kingston`s photographer Peter Dean Rickards aka The Afflicted Yard captures the Jamaican culture in all its roughness since 1999: violence, sex, drugs, music.
His picture world is relentlessly authentic without provoking for provocation`s sake. His palette of themes range from bloody slaughtering scenes at a country meat market to gun waving ganglords and Jamaican celebrities like Lee Scratch Perry, Ninjaman,Bounty Killer, Sizzla, Buju Banton, Monty Alexander and Sean Paul. Magazines like I-D, Lodown, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Complex, Vibe, NEON and XLR8R already published images from Peter Dean Rickards. His photoseries “Drunk in Miami” recently created a great hype on various fashion and photography blogs.
We sat down with Peter Dean Rickards to talk about his life, his views and his upcoming solo show at MILIEU Galerie / Artspace in Bern, Switzerland.
