After a preview earlier this year, we take a closer look at the new ‘Gucci: The Making Of’ Book by Rizzoli.

“An unprecedented publication showcasing Gucci as never before, including thought-provoking essays, commentaries, and authoritative anecdotes along with previously unpublished contemporary and archival photographs. Published in conjunction with the opening of the new Gucci Museum in Florence, Gucci is the ultimate celebration of the world-renowned fashion house. Told through a loose grouping of words, concepts, shapes, and moods, the book tells its story through new conceptual forms and the free links between images, symbols, and objects. Conceived by fashion curator Maria Luisa Frisa and W magazine editor in chief Stefano Tonchi, this comprehensive volume showcases the genius of the fashion house through an exclusive lens with inside looks into the inspirations behind the design.

This gorgeous book designed by Arnell offers an in-depth look into Gucci’s origins, identity, influence, and innovation, including fabrication methods and appropriation of signature materials, past and present, and its influence among high society and Hollywood. Featuring contributions by Lynn Hirschberg, Judith Clark, Katie Grand, Peter Arnell, Maria Luisa Frisa, and a wide variety of additional important commentators, the book is a heartfelt and personalized tribute to the heritage and influence of this iconic, multifaceted brand.”

The book comes in a beautiful leather make-up with the Gucci monogram all over, wrapped in the iconic Gucci green/red ribbon. It is now available for purchase.

“Influential to both art and fashion, Ari Marcopoulos’s unique style of raw immediacy has made him one of the most important contemporary photographers. For thirty years, photographer Ari Marcopoulos has been pioneering contemporary photography by documenting subcultures such as skateboarders and graffiti artists, as well as landscapes and his own family and friends. Since his days printing photographs for Andy Warhol, he has amassed a huge body of work marked by its arresting and unsentimental intimacy that has been influential to the worlds of art, fashion, and photography.Bound to mimic a phone book, Ari Marcopoulos: Directory presents a collection of approximately 1,200 photographs, with curator and critic Neville Wakefield providing insightful commentary on some of Marcopoulos’s singular images. Copublished with Nieves, each book in this limited-edition series includes a print signed by the artist.”

Unfortunately the book will only release April 2011, so you still have to wait a little bit!

“MUJI MUJI Book from Rizzoli , releasing on October 26, 2010, from Rizzoli, is a delightful brand book. Essays from designer Jasper Morrison and John C. Jay bring the growth of the brand into firm perspective. They write gracefully, but without the back patting celebration one might expect. They are, like the brand itself, matter of fact. Their tone is reflective of the publication as a whole – one that honestly presents three decades of advertising, product, and unique retail space. © MUJI, Rizzoli New York, 2010″

Rizzoli keeps us busy recently with a series of great book releases. The latest one to come is “Stickers: Stuck Up Piece of Crap – From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art”, by DB Burkeman.

“The publication is a massive chronicling of the history of sticker culture, with more than 4,000 images and 30 contributing writers including Martha Cooper, Stanley Donwood, Shepard Fairey, Carlo McCormick, Clayton Patterson, Stephen Powers(ESPO) and Swoon.

Stickers: From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art is out now via Rizzoli in paperback or as a limited, numbered hardcover deluxe boxed edition, including a folder pack of 23 exclusive die-cut stickers, many signed by the artists. Contributors include Kenny Scharf, Barry McGee, Ryan McGinness, Jose Parla, Mark Dean Veca, Rostarr, and Space Invader.”

A great new book, in which you will find stickers from Supreme to Obey and a range of other interesting pieces. Check out the interview with the author here.

Take a look inside the book after the jump.

Book publisher Rizzoli has released a new book celebrating influential American artist Barbara Kruger.

Bold, philosophical, radical, subversive: the art of Barbara Kruger focuses on decoding the social-psychological messages embedded in popular culture. Marrying pictures to words in a variety of media and sites, Kruger raises issues of power politics, sexuality, and representation. Borrowing slogans and phrases from the lexicon of thought, and using the potent weapon of pure graphics, Kruger’s art offers up powerfully distilled messages of word and image. This beautifully designed book is the most comprehensive volume on Kruger’s body of work to date. The book explores her work over the past thirty years, including many previously unpublished works. Aptly designed to embody a manifesto-like aesthetic, the book also presents bold spreads of the artist’s large-scale works and public projects, which confront such controversial and weighty topics as abortion, consumerism, spirituality, and identity.

The book was produced in collaboration with the artist and is now available via Amazon.

Rizzoli has amounted a series of very strong titles on and by people from our culture in the last couple of years. For Spring/Summer 2010 the book publisher will come out with the Supreme book by Aaron Bondaroff and today we learned that a book entirely concentrating on the life and career of New York artist Kaws will also be released.

“This comprehensive monograph explores KAWS’s art career in depth, from his early street art interventions to his recent send-ups of familiar cultural icons. With wit, irreverence, and even affection, KAWS takes infa- mous entertainment characters such as the Simpsons and the Smurfs and traps them in plastic blister packages while reinterpreting their appearance. The packaged “Kimpsons” and “Kurfs” are new types of hybrid artworks that both serve and criticize contemporary consumer culture. Also featured is KAWS’s astute and prolific body of commercial work, including apparel from his Japanese store OriginalFake, a partnership with Medicom Toy, as well as product design, limited-edition toys, graphic designs; collaborations with architect Masamichi Katayama and artists Hajime Sorayama, Todd James, and Mark Dean Veca; collaborations with companies including Comme des Garçons, Levis, Lucas Films, The Simpsons, Nike, Supreme, and Marc Jacobs; and Japanese companies such as A Bathing Ape, Undercover, and Visvim.”

The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum will hold a large Kaws exhibition from June 27th until January 2nd 2011 and for the opening of the exhibition the book will also be released. We will keep you posted!

Celebrating their 15th Anniversary this year, Japan’s A Bathing Ape has achieved more than most other brands in this business. Today the brand is still going strong and heavily expanding overseas, outside of Japan.
No matter what your opinion on the brand is these days, they were the first in many areas and have pushed the envelope for the market in general.
"Aptly titled A Bathing Ape, the 368-page book takes a look back at Bape’s design history, through pictures of products like G-Shocks, all over printed hoodies, and sneakers, along with the celebrities like Kanye West, Pharrell and T.I who wear them. The book will be distributed by Rizzoli International Publications and will retail for $60.00 in November." Via Complex.
The book was written by by Nigo, Ian Luna and Akio Iida. More info here.
