686 and Scion are pleased to introduce the world’s first and only car solely dedicated to snowboarding, “Numeric”. Built for snowboarders by snowboarders, the car is the caveat in the 20th anniversary celebration for 686.

686 teamed up with Scion Racing and Spin Imaging to develop the one-of-a-kind custom winter masterpiece. The Numeric is based off of Scion’s xB model. Never before has a car been re-created, re-developed and re-invigorated in such a unique manner. Each aspect of the build was directly inspired from a product and brand that’s progressively pushed snowboarding to new levels.

Each involved brand brought a unique twist to Numeric’s look. The snow specific tires reflect NB686 snowboarding boots and are branded as New Balance tires. The top of the car is designed like a Bern protective carbon fiber helmet, complete with their patented brim technology. The windshield is designed from Dragon’s APX frameless goggle and offers full peripheral view inside the car. The Sparco modified seats are inspired from actual Union team snowboard bindings and are constructed in a high-back cup shaped form. The sound system is engineered and designed by the Skullcandy team, which used their premiere Aviator headphones as inspiration. GoPro came in with their POV expertise in visual racing mirrors and interior mapping. Vestal watches and their ZR-3 Chronograph inspired the custom built time gauges. The devil is in the details and Freewaters sandals clearly did this in the first ever heated floor mats. BOA Technology added their “dialed” in fit to the cars heating and cooling system. Recco Avalanche Rescue systems supplied their sophisticated radar technology on the road and mountain terrain. Blind skateboards legendary artist, Marc Mckee provided his custom touch to the interior panels. To finalize the winter shred story, 686’s technical textile background pushed manufacturing boundaries by successfully wrapping the world’s first and only fully functional waterproof and breathable snowboarding outerwear vehicle, complete with stitched panels, laser welded seams, waterproof zipper and mesh venting.

And the list just goes on. The amount of details that went into the car are simply incredible. The action sports industry will get its first look at the vehicle in the 686 booth at SIA in Denver from January 26-29, 2012.

To promote their new small-frame iQ model, American car label Scion has produced an impressive short film featuring artwork by Franki Chan, Josh Graham, Evelyn Lee, Ana Serrano and Sage Vaughn with musical accompaniment by Todd Edwards. Check it out!

Late last week we had the opportunity to visit Manhattan Beach, California to test drive Scion’s “smarter than Smart” iQ. Though on first glance, the iQ appears to be a micro-compact 2-seater, the vehicle actually features 4 fully functional seats and can comfortably carry 3 adults and a bit of luggage.

In our test drive, the other stand-out attribute was by and large the super-tight 12.9′ turning radius, which allows for fluid 2-lane road U-turns and hilariously fun donuts (more on that later). With a look we’ve seen before, we’re not shy to say this little whip is pretty easy on the eye as well.

The Scion iQ will be available on the West Coast of the US (and all of Canada) beginning October 1, 2011 with further US launches through to March 2012, including 10 special art car editions by the likes of Mishka, The Melvins and David Choe.

This week Scion unveiled their new rear-wheel drive FR-S (Front-engine, rear-wheel drive, sport) Concept sports coupe. With aggressive styling and a low stance, the car is inspired by the Toyota AE86 Corolla and features a 2.0-liter engine with exceptionally balanced performance, handling and MPG. The Concept also features a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, LED lights, four-piston-caliper front brakes that clamp down on 18-inch carbon ceramic rotors, attached to 20-inch wheels. Looks like fun.

Fool’s Gold Records’ Joshua Prince AKA Dust La Rock shares his insights on making his Scion piece “Occult of Personality.”

LA-based brand Rogue Status are big on motorsports, participating in the Gumball 3000 amongst other events. The label recently teamed up with Scion and Rockstar to produce a Rogue Status Motorsports team jersey. The Vicci shirt is printed front and back with the omnipresent RS gun show pattern, alongside logos from all of their racing sponsors. No word yet on availability.
