While most of the news pertaining to art is emanating out of Miami at the moment, Los Angeles has offered a follow-up to this year’s monumental Art in the Streets exhibit. Done in collaboration with Vanity Fair and Cadillac, and in partnership with the MOCA and the City of West Hollywood, this murals project at the WeHo Library features works from Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf and Retna. Although this was unveiled back in October, it seems to have went under the radar, so we figured we would share some news in regards to it. Be sure to check the video featuring the artists involved below, as well as some images in our gallery.

We came across a fantastic new documentary project, Art As A Weapon, directed by Jeff Durkin.

“Art as a weapon” will look at the connection between street Art, Buddhism and the struggle for Democracy by using the closed country of Burma as a case study. The film will follow a Buddhist monk poet who’s building a library, artist Shepard Fairey painting a 30′ tall mural, and a elementary school art class learning how to use spray paint- giving the audience a peek into the the lives of artists and how art has the power to move people. Interviews include Shepard Fairey and Nobel peace prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.

This will be a “connections film” looking at the collision between the big forces that shape humanity- Art, Politics, and religion in both the eastern and western worlds. By combining beautiful cinematography, with Buddhist philosophy the project will illustrate the power Art has in the bloody fight for Democracy. Part art film, part political film, the goal is to continue spreading the word by using art as a weapon for peace in Burma.

The project is also being supported by Shepard Fairey. You can donate over at Kickstarter to bring the project to life!

More after the jump.

Shepard talks about the influence graffiti, skateboarding and punk rock had on his life and the ways it shaped his art career. Key moments such as a school trip to NY and the melding of styles by brands such as Shut Skateboards allowed him to develop his techniques. Look out for some classic 90’s skate footage as well.

On the occassion, we caught up with Shepard to talk about street art today.

What does the “Art in the Streets” exhibit mean for California and the “street art” movement overall?
The fact that this is the first official survey of Graffiti & Street Art by a major art institution makes it incredibly significant. It’s not very punk rock to say it’s nice to see all this work in an institutional setting, but in life, there’s a natural arc to things, and graffiti and street artists have worked in obscurity for little or no money—aside from some rare exceptions—for so long, it’s definitely time their efforts get the official recognition they deserve. This art is ephemeral by nature, and it deserves its place in the history books. The only way that will happen is through shows like this.

Bike label Trek has partnered with artist Shepard Fairey and his creative agency Studio Number One to design the Madone 6.9 SSL that Team RadioShack will ride throughout the 2011 Tour of California.

The bikes, emblazoned with imagery created by Fairey and inspired by the team’s namesake, were handmade and painted in Trek’s Waterloo, WI manufacturing facility. “Working with my design agency, Studio Number One, and lead Art Director Casey Ryder, we took inspiration from RadioShack’s epic electronics legacy and iconic color scheme to create a race aesthetic conveying energy, speed, and mobility,” Fairey said. “With several avid cyclists on our team, it’s always an honor to affect the surfaces of the most technically advanced race bikes in the world and work with the top-notch Trek art and design team again.”

During the Tour of California Trek will be offering the chance to win one of these limited edition bikes at trekbikes.com.

Today we present the new music video to Death Cab For Cutie’s “Home Is A Fire”. The band’s bassist Nick Harmer collaborated with none other than Shepard Fairey on the video concept.

“For me, Home Is A Fire is about redefining familiar space. The narrator in the song seems unsettled, searching and yearning, scanning the environment for something comforting in an uncomfortable place. I knew that if the band would give me a chance to make a visual accompaniment to this song that those would be the themes and mood that I would most want to highlight and accentuate. As a parallel to this, I have always been intrigued and excited about the street art movement that has really exploded during my lifetime. It’s a movement and expression that I feel defines my generation in many ways, and some artists that for years worked as shadows have now become known by name. One of those names is Shepard Fairey. And not only is he an artist that I hold in the highest regard, but he is also a friend.”

The album ‘Codes and Keys’ by Death Cab For Cutie’s will be released May 31st, 2011. (curated)

Yesterday ‘The Print Show’ by Shepard Fairey opened at Galerie Magda Danysz in Paris.

“Considered as “the most influential street artist of our time” by the Institute of Contemporary Art of Boston, Shepard Fairey (aka Obey) has always considered posters as a valuable form of art. Relentlessly he has pasted posters all over the world, renewing his visual codes through the years, building up a real language. Today his posters are world famous, became his graphic signature, instantly recognizable. In a show where about 200 prints have been gathered over a period of ten years, one ca, see the mazing amount of refrences and inspirations the artist uses. Mixing Soviet propaganda cause with heavy metal imagery, or psychedelic letterings makes it an incredible testimony of the rise of the graphic culture.”

The exhibition runs from May 7th until June 18th 2011.

We present a nice recap video of the Glen E. Friedman “Fuck You All” exhibition, currently on show at the 941 Geary Gallery in San Francisco.

“Fuck You All, is an international traveling collection of photographs that span the prolific and influential career of artist, Glen E. Friedman.

Now in its 13th year, this exhibition makes its way to San Francisco for the first time, bringing with it the work that presented some of the world’s most significant photographic contributions to the punk and hip hop subcultures and not only documented the genesis of skate culture, but helped shape it for generations to come.”

Enjoy!

“The final exhibition before the closing of New York’s seminal Deitch Projects, MAYDAY is simultaneously a call for heightened awareness and a celebration of the rebirth embodied in revolutionary movements.
MAYDAY — The Art of Shepard Fairey is published as a celebration of an evocative collection of paintings from one of the most important artists of our time. Portraits of advocates of the working class and oppressed define the collection. Fairey stakes the claim that artists, musicians and writers such as Joe Strummer, Jean Michel Basquiat and Cornel West all have parts to play in stimulating response to injustice.”
