This morning, we had the privilege of walking through the Shepard Fairey: “Supply and Demand” retrospective show opening at the ICA/Boston this Friday, February 6th. Guest curator, Pedro Alonzo led what some considered the largest press turnout for an ICA preview, through the galleries of the “Supply and Demand” retrospect, that are divided not by chronology, but by theme. “Propaganda,” “Portraiture,” and “Hierarchies in Power” explore Fairy’s critical thinking into the advertising, symbols of wealth, and heroes that surround us daily, while, galleries such as “Music” and “Stylized” explore the mashing of popular culture with music and fine art.” (HS photos: Beau Colburn)

“Supply and Demand” will run at the ICA/Boston through August 16, 2009.

More select views from Shepard Fairey: “Supply and Demand” exhibition follow after the jump.

Shepard Fairey has expanded his graphic enterprise to catalog and carrier bag work for Saks Fifth Avenue. As The Dieline so wisely points out, there is a rather frightening communist feel to them. Well, not necessarily frightening, but invoked nonetheless. The general theme might also be considered off base given current market trends.

Artist of the moment Shepard Fairey’s work for 2008 was certainly not limited to the now ubiquitous image of Obama. Fairey was also commissioned by Penguin Books to design covers for the re-release of the Orwell classics 1984 and Animal Farm. Both covers have been produced as posters, which sold quickly at the initial UK launch. Obey will be offering them to US customers on December 31, 2008. The pair hits for $140. From underground roots to national consciousness, Shepard Fairey’s Obama poster made him one of GQ’s Men of the Year. That honor is shared by the President-elect himself. Not surprisingly, Obama has been named TIME MAGAZINE Person of the Year. Who better than to design the cover for the issue than Shepard. A banner year for the artist, whose new found national acclaim should translate into some good traffic at his debut museum show, opening February at the ICA Boston. (Via SuperTouch).

highsnobiety - Shepard Fairey to Mount First Solo Museum Exhibition at ICA Boston
Shepard Fairey is no doubt one of the biggest names in street art. His "Andre the Giant" stencil one of the more famous guerrilla art pieces in recent memory. From February 6 to April 19, 2009, the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston will exhibit "Shepard Fairey: Supply and Demand." For years he’s supplied the world with countless pieces, and commercial product with Obey, boosting his demand in the art world. That has yielded this show, his first solo museum exhibition.
The ICA has a commitment to street art, and is currently showing Street Level, which closes in mid-October.
