Today ‘Dragonslayer’ will be showed for the first time to the public in the New York City at Cinema Village. Directed by Tristan Patternson, Dragonslayer is “an intimate vérité portrait of the life and times of Josh “Skreech” Sandoval, a 23-year-old skate legend from the stagnant suburbs of Fullerton, California. DRAGONSLAYER takes the viewer through a golden SoCal haze of lost youth, broken homes and abandoned swimming pools, set to a soundtrack of bands from indie-rock labels Mexican Summer and Kemado Records-including Best Coast, Bipolar Bear, Children, Dungen, Jacuzzi Boys, Little Girls and The Soft Pack—as well as Death, The Germs and Thee Oh Sees.”

Fairdale Bikes Skaterack

Fairdale Bikes has proposed a solution to those of us who like to cycle to the skate spot, but don’t want to rock a board bag or carry your deck in-hand like a real man. “Simply mount this pannier on to most existing rear carrier racks and throw your board on for the ride. A cushioned rubber coating keeps your board from rattling around and holds your board securely. The rack positions the board behind the rear axle to keep your heels from hitting it, and keeps the center of gravity low.” In stock now at Fairdale.

MAKE Skateboards Group Exhibition at I-20 Gallery

I-20 Gallery and Scott Ogden and Jonathan Lavoi present the MAKE Skateboards group exhibition, which essentially turns the gallery into a full skate shop for about two months.

“I-20 Gallery is pleased to announce MAKE SKATEBOARDS, a group exhibition and pop-up skate shop conceived as a throwback to the days when art took precedence over branding and a welcoming vibe met you at the door. The show will be a playful take on running a skateboard shop, transforming I-20 into a functional retail space offering a custom line of artist-designed skateboards, skate-related ephemera and accessories, original artwork, vintage objects, custom furniture and clothing by up-and-coming New York designers.

A true working skate shop, MAKE SKATEBOARDS will offer decks that are fully skate-able yet designed to an artistic standard. Two types of boards will be available: affordable, limited-edition silk-screened skateboards; and one-of-a-kind decks altered and embellished by hand, including several conceptual takes on the idea of skateboarding itself.”

Running until September 17th, 2011, the exhibition includes works by Michael Alan, Michael Anderson, Hawkins Bolden, Tony Bones, Slater Bradley, Carlton DeWoody, Chris Dorland, David Ellis, Orly Genger, Debra Hampton, Drew Heitzler, Horse Cycles, Grant Huang, Andrew Huston, Timothy Hutchings, Junk Prints, Jacob Kassay, Marina Kappos, KCDC, Sarah Kurz, Curtis Kulig, Wes Lang, L.A.N.D., Robert Lazzarini, Cameron Martin, Ike Morgan, Moris (Israel Meza Moreno), Scott Ogden, Olek, Erik Parker, Parts + Labor Workshop, Joyce Pensato, Portia & Manny, RePOP, Prophet Royal Robertson, Jenn Ruff, Tom Sanford, Eduardo Sarabia, Peter Saul, Bill Saylor, Kenny Scharf, Ivory Serra, Shelter Serra, MiYoung Sohn, Vincent Szarek, Bruce Lee Webb, WHIT Clothing, Wood & Faulk and Michael Zahn.

Highsnobiety TV – House of Vans Andy Kessler Day 2011

15 August 2011, 20.40 | Posted in Skateboarding | No comments »

On August 6, 2011, the New York City skateboard community gathered at the House of Vans in Brooklyn to celebrate the life of late NYC skate legend Andy Kessler. In our video recap we recap some of skating and music while speaking with Dante Ross, Tony Alva, Steve Olson, Alex Corporan, Glen E. Friedman and Ryan Dewitt (of Vans).

We also check in with artist Dennis McNett who designed two custom pieces for the event: an 11′ x 5′ Best Trick ramp shaped like Andy’s nose and a middle finger pinata full of skate goodies. RIP Andy.

Sprite Zero produced an interesting interactive commercial, allowing the user to control the skateboarder in the video with your number keys, 4-9, on the keyboard. Filmed in Berlin, the skater performs several tricks and ends up jumping into the Spree river. With the number keys you can decide on the combination of tricks. Pretty cool production, so make sure to try it out!

Some behind the scenes shots from the commercial follow after the jump.

10 Minutes with Kenny Anderson

kenny anderson by pete williams coastal carnage 10 Minutes with Kenny Anderson

Over the weekend we caught up with pro skater Kenny Anderson in Huntington Beach, CA, to chat about his new Converse KA-ONE sneaker, the Coastal Carnage skateboard competition and more.

So tell us about your new Converse shoe – what was the process like for you?

I wanted to do a cupsole because I was inspired by a shoe called the Star Player and I wanted to do something different to kind of test the old archives of Converse and found this classic trainer from the 70’s, and it has the one cup that skates like a vulc. Of course aesthetically I like the shoe, but for a cup, to be able to skate it right away like a vulcanized is great. So that was the initial process and from there I worked with Brandon the designer to make it more skateable while keeping the same classic Converse aesthetics.
