Since its founding in 1753 the British Museum has actively collected sculpture and engaged in the contemporary world. These two themes are combined in a new display, Statuephilia, that invites 5 major British Artists to compose statues in response to museum collections. These artists are Damien Hirst, Antony Gormely, Ron Muek, Noble and Webster and Mark Quinn.

The intent of the project, like many others of its ilk, is to encourage fresh looking at the museum collection. Here’s hoping Hirst and the others prompt some inspiration from the visitors. For those of you that can’t get there, the site has a wonderful rundown of each artists creation.

View Mark Quinn’s golden Kate Moss (”Siren”) and Noble and Websters mummified animals (”Dark Stuff”) from Statuephilia after the jump.
