Stephen Sprouse For Chateau Marmont

17 March 2009, 20.30 | Posted in Art | No comments »

stephen sprouse chateau marmont front Stephen Sprouse For Chateau MarmontWith the recent Stephen Sprouse collection by Louis Vuitton and the release of Le Book covered in the artists famous graffiti print, we came across an interesting story which dates back to 1991.

In 1991 Stephen Sprouse moved into Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles for a month long stay. When it was time to check out, he could not afford the bill and Andre Balazs, the owner of the hotel, ended up making a deal with him, where Sprouse would be designing some apparel for the staff of Chateau Marmont, in exchange for his stay.

A couple of months ago, Andre Balazs went through the archives of the hotel, which are stores in the attic, and they came across 6 never seen before sketches by Stephen Sprouse, all signed and dated. We got our hands on images of one of the sketches, with the other 5 spread out on the internet on other sites. Hunt them down and check them all out.

The sketches will not be sold, but Hotel Marmont honors the designer with a postcard.

A more detailed look at the Stephen Sprouse sketch and a look at the postcard follows after the jump.

This week Louis Vuitton will be celebrating the launch of the Stephen Sprouse collection in their Soho flagship store. For the occasion the store will be entirely wrapped in Stephen Sprouse graffiti and among the special items to release is also the above skateboard.

“For instance, the company is wrapping the store in vinyl and spray painting neon graffiti all over the facade. The window display will feature a 6-foot neon light installation in Sprouse’s Rose motif. The store’s interior, enhanced with black brick wall facing, will also be sprayed with the neon graffiti.

The collection will launch in its entirety at the SoHo boutique on Thursday. The complete worldwide launch will follow on Feb. 2, though the Rose pieces will be available at Louis Vuitton stores worldwide starting Friday.

For the launch, the luxury goods company is also creating two limited edition pieces, which will only be available at the SoHo location: a Stephen Sprouse graffiti skateboard replete with a hard case monogram skateboard trunk, and a Stephen Sprouse “Roses” T-shirt. The company hopes to sell three graffiti skateboards with trunks for $8,250 each, and 70 T-shirts for $250 each. “I don’t expect them to last very long,” Lalonde said. “By Friday, there probably won’t be any more left.” “Via WWD.

The price tag of the skateboard is definitely pretty high, but it is a great collectors item.

After the successful collaboration of Louis Vuitton and artist Stephen Sprouse in 2001, the two team up for the second time, utilizing the very same graffiti print. This time around they worked on bags, sneakers, shoes, sunglasses as well as some clothing and many more accessories.

Just in time for the “Rock On Mars” retrospective that will be taking place at Deitch Projects from January 8th, and the release of “The Stephen Sprouse Book”, Louis Vuitton will be coming out with the commemorative collection this month.

Along with the release of the product, Louis Vuitton will launch welovesprouse.com, a website dedicated to the artist, showcasing interviews with people that knew Sprouse. In celebration of the new LV release, Marc Jacobs posed nude painted in Sprouse’s graffiti print for Harper’s Bazaar’s January issue, which was shot by Terry Richardson. Via WWD/TBA.

Let’s see how fast the collection will sell out this time around. Detailed images of some of the product, as well as the Terry Richardson image of Marc Jacobs follow after the jump.
