What the Internet Is Saying: “The year of the $10 material foam flop. Thanks, Kanye.”

What We’re Saying: It’s hard to deny that Kanye West has, once again, started a trend. This time, thanks to his forward-thinking adidas YEEZY Foam Runners, we’ve seen an explosion of similar designs, most notably from Matthew M. Williams’ ALYX label and, now, Jerry Lorenzo’s Fear of God.

The Fear of God California, while much more subtle than the Foam Runner, sits in the same category as Williams’ and Kanye’s designs. It’s constructed using XL EXTRALIGHT material, which was also used on RAL7000STUDIO’s adidas ZX Mutant collaboration. The California Slip-On, like all of Fear of God’s products, was hand-sculpted in Italy and arrives in 5 tonal colorways.

Jerry Lorenzo teased the silhouette earlier this year, when he posted a few shots of the sneaker being worn at adidas HQ. His followers, and the team at Highsnobiety, were immediately enthralled with the design. Mules and backless footwear seem to be on a huge come up at the moment, with seemingly every brand offering their own take on the divisive design.

Fear of God’s California is about as classy as they’ll come, keeping things simple and staying in line with the brand’s design language. The slip-on drops on July 9 via Fear of God’s official site.
