This Wednesday, Bonhams Knightsbridge offers a sale of chess sets, games, and playing cards. The lots are enough to tickle my fancy for historic games and especially that of historic playing card design. A good number of rare books on chess are available as well. Highlights are certainly weird and wonderful chess sets. Few are actually weird, to be fair, but many exhibit the types of subtle design cues that continue to make chess sets so ripe for artistic exploration.

The auction begins at 12 GMT, Montpelier Street, London.

Above is lot number 64, a “St. George Pattern” boxwood and ebony chess set of the 19th-century and made in England.
