Beyond the Street: The 100 Leading Figures in Urban Art is ostensibly about compiling the most influential players in a single subset of contemporary art. As such, the “Beyond” qualifier works well – its about the street artist moving into the gallery, the people behind those sales-outlets, and the critics that have made urban art viable.

In drawing together 100 folks over 400 pages, Beyond the Street provides a more complex overview of the street art scene than many previous publications. There’s a seemingly concerted effort to draw in both traditional street artists and fine artists with a street art influence. And, by balancing these with the aforementioned outlets (galleries and criticism) manages to pull together a loose but cohesive story. Profiles include Jonathan Levine, Faile, Miss Van, and Wooster Collective.
