James Royal captured first prize at the Bend Winterfest Ice Carving Contest for his spectacular Merman. Sponsored by Dockers, the event found hearty fellows starting their chainsaws and transforming blocks of ice to beautiful sculptures. My personal favorite was James Waldron’s tremendous lion. David Wynter, who learned to carve ice as a student at the Culinary Institute of America, produced an ode to his other favorite hobby – motorcycling – and turned out a crowd favorite.

The 2011 OnPoint Community Credit Union Bend WinterFest is the largest winter festival in the Northwest.
