Following in the footsteps of Microsoft, eBay is debuting a new logo. 17 years in, they’re replacing the original stacked logo in favor of a cleaner identity, reflecting eBays transformation from a fun start-up to a multi-billion dollar corporation. The original color palette remains in the new Univers Extended logotype, but little else.

The previous eBay logo was designed by Elissa Davis and was her first job as a designer for CKS Partners in California, under the design direction of Bill Cleary. Of the logo she says:

““I loved the colours of the Apple logo and the fun movement of the Twister game and somehow that gave me the idea of eBay […] the overlapping colours were designed to convey the sense of community on eBay.”

Today the community is different than it was 17 years ago. Most of the 350 million products listed on the site are fixed price ‘Buy it Now!’ items, rather than traditional auctions

eBay says their new logo will go live mid-October. What do you think?
