AOL as an email provider has certainly seen better days but that hasn’t kept their design team from working on new, innovative products. Bill Wetherell, a senior director of UX design, introduced the new AOL Alto in New York which goes live today as part of an invite-only beta program.

Alto features a radical overhaul of inbox design and a stripped-down, visually-based layout. On the left a streamlined version of mail is organized into an easily-navigable list. Towards the right, other email essentials like photos and attachments are organized into stacks drawing visual cues from platforms like Pinterest.

Fortunately, you don’t need AOL mail to use Alto as the program is compatible with most major email providers. The platform looks promising but we’ll have to wait to get our hands on a copy before making any final judgments.
