Where the runway meets the street

Trunk Clothiers, London (you may remember them from a previous store tour) have teamed up with Yoshida Porter & Co. for an impressive capsule collection of bags. Waxed cotton canvas, vegetable tanned leather, always fans of the simple route, we threw them a few questions curious to know how the collaboration came about. Read on after the jump, see the full range up-close in the gallery and grab hold of one here.

How did you first get involved with Porter?

We actually got involved with Porter before we opened in 2010. We’ve always admired the brand and what they do so we got in touch and met with them in Tokyo where we spoke about Trunk and our concept and they really liked what we were planning on doing. After that we started working on ideas for an exclusive range together.

Can you tell us a little about the design process?

We ultimately wanted to create something that would be unique to Trunk, while at the same time staying true to the understated design and durability that Porter is known for. We’ve done this by combining tough cotton canvas with leather trims that gives the bags a distinctively natural feel. The canvas we use has been lightly treated with paraffin wax for water resistance, while the leather we used is high quality vegetable-tanned cowhide.

How would you describe the collection?

Simple and understated while at the same time highly durable and functional.

Is this set to be an ongoing project?

We are currently in the process of creating new pieces to add to our current range that will include new totes as well as backpacks and smaller goods. These new styles will be done in the same durable cotton canvas, leather trims and will be done in the current colourway. We’ve had wholesaling request from some European stores but at the moment we’re only working with B-Jirushi in Tokyo.

Any other collaborations in the pipeline?

We try work on collaborations with brands each season. When we opened our doors in 2010, we worked with Edward Green where we created an exclusive colourway for one of their loafers. We are currently collaborating with Tabio, London Undercover, Anderson’s and Caruso. We have a couple collaborations in the works at the moment one, which, I’m particularly excited about, is an exclusive collaboration with Alden for AW13.
