Where the runway meets the street

Remember when that film Rebel Without A Cause came out and everyone was absolutely outraged that anyone (James Dean) would ever have the audacity to wear an undergarment (a plain white t-shirt) as an overgarment, and not hidden beneath a pleasant cotton shirt? No you probably don’t, because unless you’re aged fifty eight or over, you wouldn’t have been born yet. But the moment when we integrated sportswear as everyday wear is much harder to pinpoint. Raglan sleeves, baseball jerseys, colour blocking and striping akin to the kit of people more used to being seen on a sports field, but tumblr has spoken and they are all over it, so who are we to argue. Here’s a selection of seven of our current favourites.

Alexander Wang Raglan Baseball T-Shirt

Alexander Wang is the indomitable King of high-end sports wear, and after six years in the business he has really got it down. The raglan sleeves and shirt tail hem are classic sports styles but Wang has given this top his own stylistic spin with some white and red color blocking. Pick yours up from Ssense now.

James Perse Long Sleeved T Shirt

It’s no surprise LA based brand James Perse pulls it out the bag when it comes to laid back sportswear basics, isn’t that like tantamount to uniform on the west coast? This Long sleeved t-shirt excels through it’s simplicity, it’s all marl and has peachy raglan sleeves and a round collar and you can just wear it. Available online from The Corner.

3.1 Phillip Lim T Shirt

The armband stripes have already been trail blazed by brands such as Wood Wood and Thom Browne, and statement logo’s are constantly at the crux of a products design. So here’s a t shirt that combines the two. This 3.1 Phillip Lim one is available from The Corner.

White Mountaineering Striped Jersey

Things have been getting real monochrome lately. I blame Kanye and A$AP for their penchant for black leather, but please let’s not forget the pleasures of color, unless you’re colorblind, in which case color is way overrated anyway. This jersey t shirt from Tokyo-based brand White Mountaineering  features navy, white, red and camel bands stitched together resulting in a bold pattern. You can buy yours now from Mr Porter.

Wood Wood Jaffee Sweater

Although technically a sweater, this Wood Wood makes up it’s sportswear vibe with raglan sleeves and a royal blue, black and white block patterning. Made from fine merino wool, although perhaps not the ideal actual sportswear it will be nice and comfortable to wear when this belated Spring finally turns up. Find yours over at Wood Wood, online or in store.

Nike X Undercover Top

Ignore everything I’ve just said. This top from the Nike X Undercover collaboration is an actual running top. Which means you are supposed to wear it and run in it and the technology means sweat is repelled or something. Despite all that, the way technology is advancing in trainers and becoming a solid part of our daily outfits, maybe it won’t be too long before that kind of technology exists in our everyday clothing too. Either way, this is an awesome top. You can get your hands on it over at Tres Bien.
