Starring, written and directed by George Clooney, The Monuments Men tells the true WWII story of a group of art historians and museum curators tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. More adept at identifying a Michelangelo than using an M-1, the film relies on the notion that “if you destroy an entire generation of people’s culture, it’s as if they never existed.” With appearances by Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bob Balaban, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin and Hugh Bonneville, The Monuments Men opens December 18.
