Where the runway meets the street

In the runway show for his latest women’s collection, New York-based designer Tom Ford presented a sequined football jersey in tribute to musician and businessman Jay Z. The jersey in question, part of the designer’s Fall/Winter 2014 evening wear offerings, featured a riff on a $65 counterfeit football jersey by Black Boy Place Jay Z has been wearing while performing the track “Tom Ford” at recent shows.

Emblazoned with “TOM FORD 61” and the word “MOLLY” crossed out, the words reference the designer’s birth year, 1961, and the drug-related lyrics. Rapping “I don’t pop molly, I rock Tom Ford,” the Brooklyn-born rapper announces he doesn’t need to take MDMA for pleasure and instead prides himself on the ability to don sharp, expensive suits. When asked about the dress, Ford replied:

I knocked off the knockoff — in sequins.
