Where the runway meets the street

Swiss watchmaker Oris has brought a first to the world of timekeeping – an automatic watch with a fully integrated mechanical altimeter. The device essentially combines two high-tech instruments into one stylish package, allowing the wearer to tell both the time and their specific altitude with one glance. Obviously this has plenty of use for pilots, balloonists and other aviators, but there are still real benefits for anyone who enjoys regular climbing, hillwalking or mountaineering – or simply flies a lot. The altimeter itself uses an internal aneroid barometer to determine the atmospheric pressure and convert that into a reading, although this can be sealed off to grant the watch 100m of water resistance. Looks-wise it’s available in both canvas strap and chain link models, and can be purchased directly from Oris here.
