Director Paul Thomas Anderson is back with his first film since 2012’s The Master, with an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel Inherent Vice. Set in Los Angeles in 1970, the film follows detective Larry “Doc” Sportello as he investigates the disappearance of a former girlfriend. After taking a more serious turn with The Master and There Will Be Blood, Inherent Vice looks to be a nice return to the dark humor-laced drama that made Boogie Nights a standout. Joaquin Phoenix leads the cast, while the rest reads like a who’s who of Hollywood including Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio del Toro, Owen Wilson and more. It opens in selected theaters on December 12, with a full release on January 9, 2015.
