Iconic midcentury architect and designer Alexander Girard is still remembered after more than two decades of his passing. Vitra has just released a new product suite based on his archival designs, made in collaboration with members of his family. Girard’s signature International Love Heart, La Fonda del Sol and other graphics show up on napkins, mugs, trays, notebooks, pillows and throws.
We’ve seen these jacquard weave wool blankets and pillows from Vitra before, but the cocktail napkins and coffee mugs particularly catch our eye as attractive and affordable buys. The latter products are from the 1970s, when Girard used to design concepts and dinnerware accessories for restaurants.
The most interesting product from Vitra’s new release is the wooden cat and dog dolls inspired by the folk art of South America, Asia and Eastern Europe. They were initially made as decorative toys for Girard’s Santa Fe home in 1963.
You can shop the entire re-release in-store and online starting today at the MoMA, with prices ranging from $5 for napkin sets to $485 for throws. All made in Germany.
