Making old-school Americana feel fresh and relevant is no easy task, but if any label can make us rethink ‘heritage,’ it’s Japan’s Phigvel Makers Co. A brand we’ve followed closely over the years, Fall/Winter 2015 carries a certain contemporary edge, placing classic garments in modern context. Heavy on the militaria, khakis, greens and browns are applied to modified outerwear pieces including the pullover USN parka and USMC herringbone twill jacket. Woollen army shirts appear collar removed, traditional blanket stripes are applied to Cowichan style cardigans, while the ever popular Brown’s Beach Vest makes a welcome, tailored appearance. All paired with simple knits, jersey and slim suiting, Phigvel breathes new life into tried and tested standards.
