So the opening weekend of Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally came and went, spurting out a Death Star full of hype and demolishing numerous box office records in the process.
With opening weekend earnings of $238 million in just the U.S., it surpassed the $208.8 million pocketed by Jurassic World earlier this year, as well as being the fastest movie to earn $1 million. Not to mention that it also set a new record for most money ever taken at a U.S. movie theater in a single weekend.
Add in Disney’s claims that the movie made another $279 million worldwide, giving it an opening total of $517 million. This falls short of Jurassic World‘s $525.9 million, but that may have something to do with the movie’s delayed release in China, which, as you’d expect, leaves a massive financial void.
