Just as people finally stop talking about hipsters so much and the first all-encompassing zeitgeist of the 21st-century slowly begins to turn yellow and withered like the late-September leaves, MAD Magazine cartoonist, Matt Lassen, runs in to stab it with a pencil.
Lampooning hipsters, he reimagined iconic cartoon characters such as Bart Simpson, Popeye and SpongeBob SquarePants as Williamsburg stereotypes, decorating them with tattoos, thick-rimmed glasses, tote bags, theatrical facial hair, and every other identikit hallmark common to these modern bohemians.
So, what’s with the illustrated hipster bashing?
“I wanted to do an homage to cartoons from my youth with a comment on society,” Lassen told Buzzfeed. “I thought it would be fun to see something I love, cartoons, with something I dislike, hipsters. Hipsters try so hard to be exaggerated and over the top which are the principles of cartooning that I thought it would be a fun series.
