Where form meets function

Basquiat’s 1982 piece, Untitled, just set a new sales record for the late, legendary artist, reaching a price of $57.3 million USD with premium at a recent Christie’s auction during a postwar and contemporary evening sale. The artwork was purchased by a Japanese enthusiast who also bought Richard Prince’s Runaway Nurse for $9.7 million USD.

While a new sales record was set for Basquiat, some other artists and their coinciding works didn’t fare quite as well. A screen-printed portrait of Liz Taylor by Andy Warhol was passed on, in addition to Mark Rothko’s No.17 selling for $32.6 million USD with premium – it was expected to go somewhere closer to $40 million USD.

Basquiat still has a ways to go before catching van Gogh, though.
